#3 Women's Ice Hockey Returns Home to Host Yale, Brown

ITHACA, N.Y. - The #3 Cornell women's ice hockey team looks to continue its success as it returns home to Lynah Rink for a Friday night and Saturday afternoon game.
 
This weekend the women's team would like to welcome back its alumnae as it hosts the annual career networking weekend. Approximately 20 alumnae will be returning to Cornell for Friday and Saturday's games. They can be picked out of the crowd as they will be wearing their red alumnae jerseys. 
 
In honor of the alumnae, Cornell women's ice hockey T-shirts, along with wristbands, will be given out before the game on Saturday.

  • These games are two of 26 out of 29 games on the Big Red's schedule to be broadcast on ESPN+, including all Cornell home games and all ECAC Hockey road games.

About the Big Red

  • With a second weekend of excellent play, the Big Red was tabbed to finish third, for the third week in a row, by the USCHO Division I Women's Poll.
  • For its opening weekend, Cornell found two shutout victories against #8 Robert Morris on Oct. 25, 6-0, and Oct. 26, 3-0. Continuing its success, the Big Red opened ECAC Hockey play with a 1-0 win against Quinnipiac on Nov. 1 and a 3-1 win over #6 Princeton, Nov. 2. For its first road trip, Cornell found a 4-1 victory against St. Lawrence on Friday (Nov. 8) and a 1-1 tie against #6 Clarkson (Nov. 9).
  • Four games into her senior season, senior defender Jaime Bourbonnais leads the team with eight points on one goal and seven assists. Bourbonnais notched at least one point in all but one of the games on the season.
  • Sophomore forward Gillis Frechette and junior forward Maddie Mills follow closely with six points on three goals and three assists. 
  • Frechette had an outstanding opening weekend, notching all six points in two games, while Mills has spread out her points collecting at least one in all but one game. 
  • Lindsay Browning became the first goalie in program history to open the season with three shutouts when the team beat Quinnipiac, 1-0. In just six games, Browning has 124 saves for a .976 save percentage. The junior goalie has let just two shots past her and into the net for a .49 goals against average.

Last Week in Review

  • For the Big Red's first road trip, the women's ice hockey team headed north to St. Lawrence and Clarkson. 
  • On Friday, Cornell found a 4-1 victory against the Saints. Seniors Amy Curlew and Grace Graham each scored two goals to lead the Big Red to its victory at night.
  • Cornell then played host, Clarkson, which resulted in a 1-1 tie. Freshman Izzy Daniel scored the Big Red goal first but the Golden Knights shortly followed with a score of their own.
 

First Points

  • With six freshmen joining the 2019-20 squad, there have been a couple of firsts in the past weekend.
    • Dressing for her first game, Izzy Daniel notched her first collegiate point with an assist against St. Lawrence on Nov. 8.
    • Daniel then went on to score the lone goal against Clarkson for her first collegiate tally on Nov. 9.
 

About Yale

  • After seven games, the Bulldogs are 5-2-0. Before starting ECAC Hockey play on Nov. 1, Yale played a two-game series against LIU (Oct. 25-26). The Bulldogs found its third victory against Dartmouth on Nov. 1 as they opened ECAC Hockey play but fell to Harvard, 5-2, on Nov. 2. Most recently, the Bulldogs fell to Boston University (BU), 3-1, on Tuesday (Nov. 12) after finding victories against Union and Rensselaer on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
  • Freshman forward Elle Hartje leads the team with 11 points on five goals and six assists. In the last week, Hartje notched one goal and one assist against Union before compiling two assists against Rensselaer
  • Sophomore defender Emma Seitz follows with 10 points on three goals and seven assists. Seitz has notched at least one point in all but one game on the season. The sophomore had a four point weekend against Union and Rensselaer in addition to one assist against BU.
  • Senior Tera Hofmann leads the goalies with 291:42 and a .962 save percentage on 75 saves. Junior Gianna Meloni follows with 109:59 and a .860 save percentage from 37 saves.
 

The Series vs Yale

  • Friday's game will mark the 74th all-time meeting between the two schools. Cornell has dominated the series, which dates back to the 1975-76 season, as it owns a 60-12-2 record against the Bulldogs. 
  • During the 2018-19 season, the Big Red went 2-0 against Yale. In New Haven, Conn., Cornell beat the Bulldogs, 4-3, before finding a 4-0 victory over Yale at home in Ithaca, N.Y. in February.
 

About Brown

  • After seven games, the Bears have earned a 1-6 overall record. Brown followed its opening weekend at RIT with three losses against Harvard (11/1), Dartmouth (11/2) and UConn (11/5). The Bears found their first win against Rensselaer, 2-1, on Friday (Nov. 8) before falling to Union, 4-1, on Saturday (Nov. 9). 
  • Sophomore forward Shay Maloney leads the team with four points on three goals and one assist. Most recently, Maloney scored a goal against Union on Nov. 1.
  • Junior forward Darby Melia and senior defender Maybelline Beiring follow with three points each. Melia notched two goals and one assist total, while Beiring has compiled one goal and two assists.
  • Senior goalie Calla Isaac has spent 234:52 in goal with 155 saves for a .912 save percentage, while sophomore goalie Hayley Kliczko has been in goal for 139:02 for 78 saves and 10 goals against.
 

The Series vs Brown

  • Saturday's matchup features the oldest varsity teams in women's college hockey history as Brown's was formed in 1965 and Cornell's in 1972.
  • The schools have met 96 times, with the first being in the 1972-73 season.
  • Last year, the Bears snapped the Big Red's 24-game unbeaten streak in the series downing Cornell 4-3. 
  • For its home game, the Big Red came back to win 4-1 to lead the series 52-35-9
 

Two Peas in a Pod

  • Micah Zandee-Hart and Kristin O'Neill will be serving as the team's captains for the second year.
  • Zandee-Hart led the 2018-19 squad with 55 blocks, while also finishing third with 17 assists and sixth with 21 points.
  • O'Neill led last year's team with 22 goals while finishing second in points (38) and tying for first in power-play goals (7).
 

Border Battle

  • Out of the 28 players on the roster, 19 are from the United States while nine call Canada home. 
  • The Americans have representatives from Minnesota (5), California (2), New York (2), Massachusetts (2), Michigan (1), Iowa (1), Illinois (1), Pennsylvania (1), Virginia (1) and Connecticut (1).
  • The Canadians on the roster come from five different provinces: Ontario (5), New Brunswick (1), Saskatchewan (1), British Columbia (1) and Newfoundland and Labrador (1).
 

About Head Coach Doug Derraugh

  • Now entering his 15th season directing the Cornell women's ice hockey program in 2019-20, Doug Derraugh has brought the Big Red women to their place among the nation's elite.
  • Derraugh has a 267-150-42 record in his first 14 seasons as the head coach of the Big Red, with his 200th coming in the form of a 4-2 win against Yale in 2016.
  • Cornell has made the ECAC Hockey Tournament each of the last 12 seasons, won the tournament four of the last 10 years and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in seven of those seasons.
  • The 2019 American Hockey Coaches Association National Coach of the Year guided the Big Red to the national title game in his fifth season and back-to-back-to-back NCAA Frozen Four appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Cornell returned to the NCAA Frozen Four in 2019 after finishing as National Quarter Finalists in 2013, 2014 and 2017.
  • He led the team to five consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in program history in 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14.
 

About Associate Head Coach Edith Racine

  • Edith Racine enters her first season as the associate head coach after serving as an assistant coach for 10 years prior. 
  • Under her direction, the Big Red has seen vast improvement among its goaltenders. During her time at Lynah, Racine has most notably coached Amanda Mazzota, Lauren Slebodnick, Paula Voorheis and Marlene Boissonnault.
  • During her first season with the Big Red, Racine coached Mazzota to finish as the national leader in shutouts (11) in the 2009-10 season, breaking the Cornell single season record for both men's and women's ice hockey. Mazzota was also the national leader for goals against average (1.11) after the close of the 2010-11 season, as well as the runner-up in save percentage. 
  • Slebodnick finished her career with the top spot in Cornell history for career wins (68) and sixth-best goals against average in the nation during the 2012-13 season.
  • Voorheis was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team in 2013-14. She finished her career after the 2016-17 campaign ranked second all-time in save percentage (.925) and saves (2,238) and third in goals against average (2.14). 
  • Most recently, Racine has coached Marlene Boissonnault to national success. Boissonnault finished her senior season (2018-19) ranked second in the nation, and first in the ECAC, in goals against average (1.64). Boissonnault was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week six times in her career (2x in 2018-19 and 4x in 2017-18). She finished the second-winningest goalie in program history with 56 wins. 
 

Up Next

  • The Big Red will return to action for three games throughout Thanksgiving week. On Tuesday, November 26, the team will travel to face Syracuse before heading to Ohio for two games against Ohio State on Friday and Saturday (November 29-30).
