PHILADELPHIA – The men's tennis team opened play at the ECAC Indoor Championships on Friday with a 4-0 quarterfinal loss to host Penn at Hecht Tennis Center.
Seeded fourth in the field of seven Ivy League teams, Cornell (2-5) conceded the doubles point to start the day. But the Big Red answered with
Joseph McAllister cruising to win his first set at No. 6 singles. The rest of the singles matches were close in the first set, but Penn prevailed in the rest of them – capped with a tiebreaker win at No. 3. That left Penn (7-1) in command, and they clinched the victory with straight-set wins at positions 1,2 and 4.
With the loss, Cornell will remain idle until the tournament's fifth-place match at 9 a.m. Sunday. The Big Red will take on the winner of a Saturday morning match between Brown and Yale.
