Men's Tennis Sails Past Clemson, Binghamton To Extend Streak

ITHACA, N.Y. – The men's tennis team pushed its winning streak to five matches without yielding a single point in either of its matches Friday, first topping Clemson, 4-0, before a 6-0 triumph over Binghamton at Reis Tennis Center.

Playing its final home non-league matches of the season, Cornell (7-5) rolled to straight-set victories across the board. The victory agains Clemson (8-7) avenged a narrow loss to the Tigers last year in South Carolina, and it started with the return of senior David Volfson to the lineup for the first time in dual matches this season. He teamed with junior Lev Kazakov to win in No. 3 doubles, which coupled with a 6-3 win at No. 2 by senior Jake Hansen and junior Daniel Soyfer (over a Clemson tandem that entered the match 7-1 in dual matches), staked the Big Red to an early 1-0 lead. Singles victories from Kazakov (No. 2), Soyfer (No. 3) and junior Pietro Rimondini (No. 6) followed to clinch the match and send the Big Red over .500 for the first time. It also allowed Cornell to improve to 4-1 all-time against Clemson.

Cornell and Binghamton (7-7) then agreed to eschew doubles in the second match of the evening which saw the Big Red surge to its 27th victory in 30 all-time meetings with the Bearcats. Soyfer had the easiest victory at No. 3, conceding just three games to record his seventh victory in duals. That ties him for the team lead with Kazakov, who also emerged victorious at No. 2. Volfson's first singles appearance in a dual match also resulted in a victory from the No. 4 spot for the nation's 22nd-ranked player.

The Big Red hits the road again next weekend, when it joins seven other teams in the Oracle Collegiate Challenge, which is part of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif. Cornell is slated to play three matches over the three days during the to-be-announced schedule in a field that also includes Arizona State, Baylor, Cal, Idaho, Michigan, Purdue and USC.
