ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's tennis team improved to 4-0 in the Ivy League and capped a perfect 8-0 run at Reis Tennis Center this year with a 4-1 victory over Princeton on Sunday.
The victory leaves Cornell (13-8, 4-0) in a three-way tie for first place in the Ancient Eight with Columbia and Harvard. All three teams play the other two plus Dartmouth (14-6, 3-1) over the final two weeks of the regular season.
"We're finally healthy and playing some good tennis," said
Silviu Tanasoiu, the Savitt-Weiss Head Coach of Men's Tennis at Cornell. "The three matches we have left are the three toughest, though, and we're away for all of them. So we'll see."
Leading the charge on improved health is senior
David Volfson. He teamed with junior
Daniel Soyfer to defeat the Princeton No. 1 doubles team of Payton Holden and Ryan Seggerman – ranked 17th in the nation – to help the Big Red open with a 1-0 lead. Volfson then cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, giving him a 6-0 record since returning from a lengthy injury-related absence.
Junior
Lev Kazakov also won in both singles and doubles on Sunday. He teamed with sophomore
Alafia Ayeni to win handily at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, then sailed to a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles. The Big Red's other point came from Soyfer and No. 4.
Cornell has now defeated Princeton in 10 of the last 16 meetings between the programs. The Big Red hits the road next weekend for a pair of pivotal matches at Harvard (1 p.m. Saturday) and Dartmouth (1 p.m. Sunday).
