About the Big Red
For just the third time in program history, Cornell posted a win against #18 Syracuse for its season opener. Continuing its success, the Big Red earned a double-overtime win against Lock Haven to close its opening weekend 2-0. The team has a 2-1 record after a 4-2 loss to #14 Saint Joseph's (SJU) on Sunday, Sept. 15.
Three Big Red field hockey players lead the team with four points. Sophomore forward
Claire Jones and freshman midfielder
Caroline Ramsey each have two goals, while senior midfielder
Maddy Conklin has one goal and two assists on the season.
Jones opened the season with the first, and eventual game-winning goal against Syracuse. Jones earned a second game-winning goal when she scored in overtime against Lock Haven. In scoring two game-winning goals in one weekend, Jones was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week.
Ramsey became the first of the class of 2023 to score a goal on the season. She totaled two goals throughout the weekend, one against Syracuse and the game-tying goal against Lock Haven.
Conklin assisted on the overtime goal against Lock Haven, in addition to scoring the first goal of the game. Conklin also assisted on the first Big Red goal against SJU.
Senior midfielder
Kirsten Pienaar made two defensive saves in game-changing moments against both Syracuse and Lock Haven. Pienaar added a defensive save and a goal against SJU.
Totaling 17 wins in her career, senior goalie
Maddie Henry's two wins on the season brought her up in Cornell's all time records. Henry is currently tied at eighth all-time with
Carolyn Horner (2010-13) and Molly Kauffman (1994-96). With one more win Henry will be tied for fifth place all-time.
After serving as the head coach of the field hockey team at the University of the Pacific, Smith was named the head coach of the Cornell field hockey team in May of 2019.
Smith comes to East Hill after leading the Pacific Tigers to four regular season conference titles in six seasons. Smith also coached four student athletes to All-American honors, in addition to five athletes being selected to participate in FIH World level events.
Smith brings a new staff of assistant coaches to Cornell this season.
Laura Hurff and
Johnny Orozco joined the Big Red staff as assistant coaches after successful stints in their respective USA National Teams.
Taylor Dempsey joins the team as a volunteer assistant coach after a decorated playing career at the University of the Pacific.
National Appeal
The Big Red has eight different states, as well as Canada and South Africa, represented on the team of 23.
For the first year New Jersey ties Pennsylvania as the most represented state. Pennsylvania has been the most represented state since 2015. A total of 10 players call New Jersey or Pennsylvania home, five each. The other states with multiple representatives are New York (3) and Texas (2), plus one student-athletes from Connecticut, Maine, Maryland and Texas.
There are three international student-athletes as well, two from British Columbia, Canada and one from South Africa.
In addition to our athletes, we have two coaches from California (Hurff and Dempsey), one from Delaware (Orozco) and head coach
Andy Smith hails from Doncaster, England.
About Lafayette
The Leopards opened the season with a 2-1 win against Virginia Commonwealth University. Their win was followed by four losses against #18 Syracuse, Appalachian State, #20 Liberty and Providence. With a 2-1 overtime win against Richmond, the Leopards improved their record to 2-4. Before traveling to Ithaca, Lafayette will host Holy Cross on Friday evening.
Freshman Felicitas Hannes leads the team with five points on two goals and one assist.
Senior Sam Di Maio follows her with four points on two goals.
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Park has stayed on the field for the entirety of all six games. Park has a save percentage of .745 with 38 saves on the season.
The Series vs Lafayette
The Big Red first played the Leopards in 1985. Lafayette earned the victory in seven of the first nine meetings, with the other two being ties.
Cornell picked up its first win in 1998, with five more following in its path.
The Big Red has won three of the last four meetings, in 2006, 2007 and 2017.
Cornell last played the Leopards in 2018, when Lafayette won, 2-1, in overtime. The Leopards lead the series, 13-6-2, all-time.
