ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell women's tennis team returns to action this weekend, opening the 2023 portion of the schedule against Boston University and NJIT at the Reis Tennis Center.
Cornell welcomes Boston University to Ithaca on Saturday before hosting NJIT on Sunday. Both matches are slated for 11 a.m. starts.
Sophomore
Lan Mi enters the pair of matches this weekend with a singles ranking of No. 125.
In the Big Red's last competition in the fall at the UB Invite in Buffalo, Mi and freshman
Emma Baker each went 3-0 over their singles matches against opponents from Syracuse, Niagara, and Buffalo.
Scouting Boston University
Boston University also enters the weekend appearing in its first competition of the spring season. The Terriers will make the trip up I-81 following Saturday's match to play Syracuse the next day.
Cornell and Boston University squared off last year on March 20, with the Big Red prevailing by a 5-2 score. Mi and then-junior
Lauren Stein each recorded a pair of victories against the Terriers.
In singles, Mi claimed a straight-set victory over Victoria Carlsten, 6-1, 6-2, before teaming up with
Alexandra Savu in doubles, 6-3, over Carlsten and Michelle Kleynerman. Stein won a three-set match over Shelly Yaloz in singles, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4. Along with
Jenny Wong, Stein defeated Erica Di Battista and Emily Kim, 6-3.
Scouting NJIT
NJIT is also participating in its first set of matches in the spring portion of the schedule this weekend. The Highlanders open its 2023 slate against Syracuse before traveling south to play the Big Red on Sunday.
Cornell and NJIT faced each other at the UB Invite, in which the Big Red went 3-2 in singles and 0-2 in doubles. Mi, Baker, and
Tanya Fan earned the victories in singles action.
This is the first time Cornell and NJIT are facing each other in the spring portion of the schedule since Feb. 4, 2018. The two teams were slated to play in 2020, but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Glancing Ahead
Following this weekend's pair of matches, the Big Red will return to the court next weekend when it travels to Syracuse for a 3 p.m. match on Saturday, Jan. 27. Cornell will have a quick turn-around as it hosts Delaware at 10 a.m. at the Reis Tennis Center in the first of three consecutive home matches.
