ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell sailing tallied more history as the MAISA Fall Championships wrapped up this past weekend. The Big Red finished second in the War Memorial Regatta in Ithaca, N.Y., and third in the MAISA Women's Fall Dinghy Championship. The Big Red ranked fourth to close out the season in the 2023 MAISA Open Standings. In the women's standings the Big Reds third place finish in Kings Point, N.Y. was enough to secure the second-place ranking in the women's MAISA women's team standings.
"The team members that traveled with me to the Women's conference championship were locked in," said assistant coach Gabbi Delbello. "They felt the intensity and maintained focus until the last race, as you can see our A and B division won both last races. Saturday and Sunday brought polar opposite weather and wind directions. The team adapted and pushed through the adversity they faced. I am extremely proud to see our entire roster rising in skill, performance, composure, and character. Everyone has different paths to success and it's amazing to see buy in to the process translate to success on the race course."
Bridget Green highlighted the best finish for Cornell at War Memorial since 1965 which also marks the top finish in the history of the program at varsity status. She skippered Division A with
Sophia Mulvania and
Lucija Ruzevic splitting time as skippers. Over the course of the weekend, the trio combined for seven top-three finishes including first-place finishes in races six and seven. In Division B,
Winborne Majette skippered the boat with
Amelia Neumann and
Kit Harned each took races as a crew. the group finished seventh overall, and had a weekend-best finish at second in the third race.
At the MAISA Women's Fall Dinghy Championships,
J.J. Smith skippered the Division A boat, where
Kate Moran and
Sophia Pearce each crewed. The group finished fourth overall, with two first-place finishes in the third and 14th races, along with six other top-three finishes. In Division B,
Lauren Ehnot skippered with
Sophia Pearce and
Clara Hewson as her crew. They combined for a second-place finish after matching Georgetown's score of 43. The Hoyas took the first-place spot with the edge in first-place finishes, capturing five compared to the Big Red's three.
The Big Red is back in action for one more fall regatta when Ruzevic and Ehnot travel to the Singlehanded National Championships on Nov. 11-12 in New Orleans, La.
