Sailing Wins Maritime Fall Open, Places Second at Women's ACC Semifinals

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Big Red's forced week off proved to be inconsequential, as Cornell sailing won the Maritime Fall Open, and finished second at the Women's ACC Semifinals, the best finish in program history.

At the Maritime Open, the Big Red sat in the top-two in both divisions at the end of day one. In Division A, the Big Red completed the day at second. Sophia Devling and Kate Moran teamed up for two first-place finishes on races four and seven. In the B Division, Lauren Ehnot and Kit Harned dominated, finishing day one with five first-place finishes across eight races, wrapping up race day one with just 13 points, 19 points ahead of second-place Penn. On day two, Boris Bialer subbed in for Moran as the crew, while Devling skippered her way to a third place finish in Division A. Pilar Cundey served as skipper on day two for Division B, where she continued the Big Red success continued. Cundey and Harned sailed their way to a first-place finish, tallying 31 points. Combined, the Big Red finished first overall.

At the Women's ACC Semifinals, the Big Red finished Division A in second after the first day. Bridget Green and Sophia Pearce combined for the effort, concluding the day with a first-place finish in race eight. In Division B, the Big Red split time in the boat with J.J. Smith and Winborne Majette each serving as skipper, and Amelia Nuemann and Sophia Mulvania split time as crew. The four combined for a seventh-place spot after day one. On day two, Mulvania joined Green in Division A,  where the two combined for two more first-place races, and finished second in the division, a narrow eight points behind Navy. In Division B, Lucija Ruzevic and Pearce took turns at crew in races 15 and 16. Ruzevic aided Majette to a first-place race in race 15, helping the team improve to a sixth-place finish on day two. Combined, the Big Red earned its historic second-place finish.

The Big Red returns to the water tomorrow, Saturday, October 7 and Sunday October 8 for the Coed ACC Semifinals in Cambridge, Mass., and the Stu Nelson Women's Regatta in New London, Conn.
