ITHACA, N.Y.--The Big Red women's hockey team opened its season with a 9-3 exhibition win over Stoney Brook in Lynah Rink on Friday night. Cornell was led by junior Stephanie Holmes who tallied two goals and two assists for the Big Red. Junior Jenny Niesluchowski and Kayla Strong split time in net making 11 and eight saves, respectively.
Stoney Creek opened scoring 1:20 into the game with Natasha Fryer netting a goal assisted by Kristen Barbara and Dallas Boyd.
Senior Emma Chipman tied the score a little over two minutes later poking the puck past goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater. Holmes picked up her first assist on the goal.
Holmes skated the puck in from outside the blue line off a pass from Rebecca Johnston. The junior transfer launched a backhanded shot over the goaltender's left shoulder to put Cornell up, 2-1, at 6:50 of the first period.
At 7:33, Brianne Gilbert scored the Big Red's third goal with a wrap-around shot, with sophomore Hayley Hughes picking up the assist.
Jessica Wong scored the Sabres' second goal at 16:59 picking up her own rebound to net the puck past Niesluchowski.
Freshman Jenna Paulson made a full-ice pass to Liz Zorn, and with a quick fake flipped the puck into the net at 3:01 of the season period. Stoney Creek entered netminder Kristen DiCiocco after the goal.
The Big Red fired a few shots to create a pile up in front of the Sabres' net. Freshman Catherine White pushed the puck past Drinkwater to put Cornell up, 5-2. Gilbert and Holmes assisted on the goal.
At 5:07 of the second period, Hayley Hughes won a face off passing the puck back to freshman Jess Martino. Martino took a one-timer slap shot from the blue line, rifling the puck over the goalie's shoulder.
Freshman Chelsea Karpenko picked up the puck behind the Big Red's net and skated it the entire length of the ice to score Cornell's seventh goal.
At 8:38 of the third period, sophomore Karlee Overguard picked up the puck from defenseman Amber Overguard, passing it ahead to Holmes. Holmes flipped a wrist shot into the top of the net to lengthen Cornell's lead to 8-2.
Stoney Creek had a two man advantage midway through the third period. The Sabres ' Emily Martz scored right as the first penalty expired to net Stoney Creek's third goal.
The Big Red's Amanda Young scored Cornell's ninth goal at 17:55 of the third period with a wrist shot from the circles. White and Karpenko assisted on the goal.
The Big Red outshot Stoney Creek 50-22. Drinkwater made 17 saves, while DiCiccio notched 24.
Cornell will be back in action Saturday afternoon as it plays host to Durham for a 3 p.m. match.
