The Big Red kicks off its conference schedule this Halloween weekend with games against two top ECAC Hockey opponents, Dartmouth and Harvard. The Ivy League battles begin with Dartmouth at 3 p.m. on Friday, with the Big Red taking on the Crimson on Saturday, also starting at 3 p.m. Live streaming video and live stats for both games will be available at www.CornellBigRed.com.
ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell opened the 2009-10 season last weekend against the nation's top-ranked team, Mercyhurst, and fell by identical 4-1 scores in both games at Lynah Rink. Sophomore
Chelsea Karpenko scored her first goal of the season in the opener, while
Karlee Overguard got the lone goal of the year in the second game.
Kendice Ogilvie,
Jess Martino and
Catherine White each had an assist on the weekend. In goal, sophomore
Amanda Mazzotta made 38 saves in the two games, posting a .844 save percentage and a 3.58 goals-against average. Cornell went 1-for-11 on the power play on the weekend and successfully killed off all seven shorthanded opportunities.
HEAD COACH DOUG DERRAUGH
In his fifth season behind the Big Red bench,
Doug Derraugh has turned the Cornell women's hockey program into one of women's college hockey's top young programs. Derraugh has a career record of 37-72-11, but has taken the Big Red to a back-to-back double-digit wins in each of the last two seasons, the first time the Big Red has done that since the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 seasons. He has also led Cornell to the ECAC Hockey playoffs in each of the last two seasons. Derraugh is assisted by Danielle Biloudeau, in her fourth season, and Edith Zimmering, in her first year with the Big Red.
ABOUT DARTMOUTH
Dartmouth enters this season with 17 returning players hungry to make another postseason run after last year's loss to eventual national champion Wisconsin in the NCAA Division I Quarterfinals. Ranked eighth in the country entering the week, Dartmouth relies heavily on a lethal offense that ended last season with 326 total points: a clear leader in the conference for goals (125), assists (200), and shots on goal (1186). Their attack will be led this year by junior Amanda Trunzo, who headed the offense last season with 42 points, and senior Jenna Cunningham, a preseason All-ECAC Hockey player and former Patty Kazmier Award nominee.
THE SERIES WITH DARTMOUTH
Dartmouth leads the all-time series against Cornell, 39-20-6. The last meeting was a late regular season game at Lynah Rink that ended in a hard-fought 3-3 tie and helped the Big Red clinch an ECAC Hockey playoff spot while spoiling Dartmouth's chance at winning the Ivy League title.. The tie broke a 19-game losing skid for the Big Red against the Big Green..
ABOUT HARVARD
Harvard starts the 2009-2010 season as the defending regular season ECAC Hockey and Ivy League champions, though the Crimson fell to Rensselaer in the ECAC Hockey semifinals last season. The Crimson enter this week's play ranked ninth in the country in the latest USCHO.com poll, but the Crimson will have to overcome the loss of last season's top three scorers, including graduated senior Sarah Vaillancourt, the 2007-08 Patty Kazmeier Award winner. Still, the Crimson return former All-America goaltender and preseason all-league pick Christina Kessler, who finished second in the nation last year with a 1.59 goals-against average, while boasting a career .941 save percentage.
THE SERIES WITH HARVARD
Harvard leads the all-time series, 50-17-2, after claiming all four meetings last year including a pair of games in the ECAC Hockey quarterfinal round. Cornell's last win against the Crimson came during the 2005-06 season, when Cornell scored a 4-3 victory on Feb. 17, 2006, in Cambridge, Mass. Cornell's last win against Harvard at Lynah Rink came during the 1996-97 season, a 5-2 Big Red victory.
SOMETHING SPECIAL
The brightest spot in the series against Mercyhurst was Cornell's special teams. The penalty kill went 7 for 7 against Mercyhurst , stopping 15 shots and recording 3 shots short-handed, and is one of only two teams in the nation to have not allowed a power-play goal yet this season (Wisconsin is 29-of-29 on the penalty kill). The Big Red also converted on one of its four power-play chances on Saturday to finish the weekend 1-for-11 on the man advantage.
KEEP IT CLEAN
Cornell enters this weekend tied for the fourth fewest penalties in Division I hockey, averaging just nine minutes in the penalty box per game. Only Quinnipiac, St. Lawrence and Northeastern have fewer penalty minutes per game this season than the Big Red.
TEAM SPIRIT
Five different Cornell players put up points last weekend as the Big Red benefitted from a balanced offense. Goals by both
Chelsea Karpenko and
Karlee Overguard showed that several Big Red lines will pose scoring threats.
RISING STARS
Coach
Doug Derraugh pulled off a major recruiting coup when he landed
Lauriane Rougeau and
Laura Fortino from the Canadian U-18 National Team. The freshmen have already made a huge impact on the blue line, starting both games against Mercyhurst and seeing substantial time on the unbeaten penalty kill during the first weekend.
DUAL THREAT
Cornell's women's hockey team features two players who are dual-sport athletes: senior Mel Jue, a goaltender for the Cornell field hockey team, and freshman
Xandra Hompe, a member of the Cornell women's soccer team. Both have excelled in their other sport this fall, as Jue is currently ranked fourth in the country in save percentage while Hompe, has collected a pair of assists for the women's soccer squad. Jue has appeared in both games this season for the Big Red, with Hompe making her collegiate hockey debut on Saturday against the Lakers.
UP NEXT
Cornell will take to the road for the first time this season when it travels to Union and Rensselaer for a pair of games next weekend. The Big Red will take on the Dutchmen at 3 p.m. on Friday before facing Rensselaer on Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. start.
