ABOUT THE BIG RED
After a pair of wins on the road over ECAC Hockey opponents Union and Rensselaer, Cornell moved up the USCHO.com poll to its current ranking of #7 in the nation and broke into the USA Hockey/USA Today poll at number 10. Cornell ranks among the top teams in the nation in scoring offense (2.67 per game, 13th) and in scoring defense (2.00, 8th). The Big Red blanked Union on Friday night in a 4-0 win with a pair of goals from
Laura Danforth and skated away with a 3-1 victory over Rensselaer on Saturday after scoring a goal each period of play. The second straight four-point weekend increased Cornell's record to 4-2-0 going into this tough weekend series against perennial powerhouses Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
Catherine White leads the team offensively with one goal and six assists for seven points in six games, while
Chelsea Karpenko has a team-best three goals. In goal,
Amanda Mazzotta has a sparkling 1.85 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage with a pair of shutouts.
HEAD COACH DOUG DERRAUGH
In his fifth season behind the Big Red bench,
Doug Derraugh has turned the Cornell women's hockey program into one of women's college hockey's top young programs. Derraugh has a career record of 41-74-9, but has taken the Big Red to a back-to-back double-digit wins in each of the last two seasons, the first time the Big Red has done that since the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 seasons. He has also led Cornell to the ECAC Hockey playoffs in each of the last two years. Derraugh is assisted by Danielle Biloudeau, in her fourth season, and Edith Zimmering, in her first year with the Big Red.
ABOUT CLARKSON
The Golden Knights are on a national-best seven-game winning streak, including going 5-0 in ECAC Hockey action. Ranked second in the country in both national polls, their 11-1-1 record has them third in the nation for team winning percentage. Connecticut transfer Dominque Thibault, a former RBK All-American and last year's Hockey East Player of the Year, has already made her mark on her new team by registering 17 points on eight goals and nine assists to lead Clarkson in scoring. Clarkson's defense is currently ranked second in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 15 goals in 13 games. The defense will be supported by Lauren Dahm, a former Patty Kazmier Award nominee, who returns in goal this season for Clarkson. She is currently ranked second in the nation for goals against average at 1.07 and fourth for save percentage at .946.
THE SERIES WITH CLARKSON
Since their first meeting in 1974-1975, Cornell has led the all-time series against Clarkson 14-8-1. The Big Red won both games last season, including last year's meeting at Lynah Rink on Jan. 31, 4-1, after tallying three goals in the first eight minutes of play.
ABOUT ST. LAWRENCE
St. Lawrence comes to Cornell this weekend off a 0-3 loss to Harvard last Saturday in Cambridge, Mass. Sophomore Vanessa Emond leads the Saints offensively with eight goals and six assists for 14 points, while Kelly Sabatine has nine points on three goals and six assists. In goal for the Saints, Brittony Chartier has played the majority of time in goal, posting a 2.09 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage.
THE SERIES WITH ST. LAWRENCE
St. Lawrence leads the all-time series against Cornell, 21-30-0. Last season, their second meeting resulted in a 2-1 Big Red loss at home, while the game in Carton, N.Y. went into overtime and ended in a 4-4 tie. The tie, supplemented by a hat-trick from last season's leading scorer
Rebecca Johnston, helped end a 19-game losing streak against the Saints.
LEADING THE WAY
Through three ECAC Hockey games this season, the Big Red has led for 177:58, or an astonishing 75 percent of the time. The Big Red has only trailed for 45 seconds (or 0.3 percent of the time) in its four league games, that coming in the second period against Harvard on Oct. 31. Cornell has been tied for the other 25 percent of time (61:17).
NATURAL BORN KILLERS
Cornell's special teams units have played well in the early going and are now gaining national recognition for their penalty kill. Allowing just one power play goal in 22 opportunities, Cornell is now ranked first in the nation despite being the second least penalized team, averaging just minutes per game in the penalty box. The special teams unit has also gotten a boost from the power play, which has converted 7 times in 28 opportunities (25.0 percent).
EVEN FLOW
Despite the loss of last year's leading scorer and Patty Kazmier Award nominee
Rebecca Johnston, the Big Red has shown the ability to record points by utilizing a well-balanced attack; 14 players on the 16-skater roster have contributed to the team's 42 points. This widespread scoring gives the Big Red a versatile offense that has shown an ability to score not only at even strength but also in special teams situations. The only skaters on the roster who have yet to find the scoring column are sophomore
Jenna Paulson and freshman
Xandra Hompe.
LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN
With five points this season, freshman
Lauriane Rougeau is currently ranked fifth in the nation in points per game among defenseman and is the highest-scoring rookie defenseman in the country (T-7th). Rougeau is also tied for second with
Karlee Overguard on the Big Red in scoring with her five points.
BRICK WALL
Borrowing a page from the men's hockey program, which has a history of producing outstanding goaltenders, sophomore
Amanda Mazzotta has been outstanding in ECAC Hockey action this year. After allowing seven goals in the first two games of the season against Mercyhurst, Mazzotta now ranks ninth in the nation in goals-against average (1.85). In league play, she is allowing just 1.00 goals per game, ranking fourth in league games.
TWO-WAY PLAYERS
Cornell's women's hockey team has a pair of players who give new meaning to the term two-way player, as senior
Melanie Jue and freshman
Xandra Hompe are dual-sport athletes. Jue is a goalie for the field hockey team, and is ranked fourth in the nation in save percentage this season. Hompe, meanwhile, is a forward for the women's soccer team, tallying a pair of assists this fall for the Big Red.
HALFWAY TO THE CENTURY MARK
With the assist on
Chelsea Karpenko's goal in the third period of the Harvard game on Nov. 7,
Catherine White scored her 50th career point. In just her second year with the Big Red, White has the highest point total of any player on the Cornell roster and is leading scoring this season with 7 points. Two others are nearing the 50 point mark, as junior
Karlee Overguard has 46 points in 66 career games and senior
Liz Zorn has 41 points in 91 career games.
UP NEXT
