PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The No. 2 ranked Big Red wrestling team won seven out of 10 matches on Friday afternoon on its way to a 32-9 victory over Brown. Cornell moves to 11-2 overall this season and is 4-0 against Ancient Eight competition. Troy Nickerson and Mack Lewnes both won by fall, while Mike Grey won by technical fall to help the Big Red continue its quest for its seventh-straight Ivy League title.
Nickerson earned an early takedown in the first period of his match at 125 pounds against Greg Einfrank. The Big Red wrestler continued to work on his opponent and earned a three-point nearfall midway through the period. Nickerson cut Einfrank loose and picked up another takedown to take a 7-1 lead into the second period. Einfrank chose to start the second down and earned a point with an escape. Nickerson lengthened his advantage to 10-3 going into the third. Nickerson quickly escaped to start the third and was awarded his second point for Einfrank's stalling. The 125 pounder grabbed hold of Einfrank and turned him to his back to win by fall in 5:54 to give the Big Red a quick 6-0 lead.
At 133 pounds, No. 11 Grey faced off against Ross Baldwin. Grey dominated his opponent from the opening whistle and with three takedowns and two nearfalls, he went ahead 11-2 after three minutes. Grey quickly escaped from his opening down position in the second period and racked up a 16-3 lead going into the third. The Big Red wrestler notched two more takedowns to win 20-5 by tech fall.
Sophomore Corey Manson faced off against Steve Delorenzo at 141 pounds. Delorenzo earned the first points of the match with 20 seconds left in the period to take a 2-0 lead, but Manson quickly escaped to come within a point. In the second period, Delorenzo picked up the only point with an escape from his opening down position. Manson quickly escaped from his opening down position in the third period to come within a point. Manson took a shot late in the period looking to score, but Delorenzo countered to grab a takedown and win a 5-2 decision.
At 149 pounds, sophomore DJ Meagher squared off against Dave Foxen. Meagher took him down at 2:03 of the first period and rode his opponent for the remainder of the period. Meagher chose to start the second period down on the mat and quickly escaped and grabbed another takedown. Foxen chose to start the third down on the mat, but could not escape Meagher. With 5:21 in riding time, Meagher won a 6-0 decision.
Freshman Derek Schreiner wrestled Bryan Tracey at 157 pounds. Tracey took a 2-1 lead into the second period after he notched a takedown from which Schreiner escaped. Tracey chose to start the second period down on the mat and earned the only point of the period with an escape. With only five seconds off the clock, Schreiner escaped from his opening down position in the third period. The Big Red wrestler was unable score again and Tracey edged him out by a 3-2 decision.
No. 1 ranked Lewnes took on Chris Musser at 165 pounds. Midway through the period Lewnes took down his opponent and immediately turned him to his back. Lewnes won by fall in 2:22 to put Cornell up 20-6.
Steve Anceravage won by forfeit to pick up six quick points for Cornell at 174 pounds.
At 184 pounds, No. 15 Justin Kerber faced Matt Gevelinger. Kerber took on a 4-1 lead going into the second after picking up two takedowns. Gevelinger grabbed the only point of the second period, finally escaping Kerber with 45 seconds off the clock. Kerber chose to start the third down on the mat and quickly escaped. The Big Red wrestler won a 5-2 decision over Gevelinger.
No. 14 ranked Cam Simaz took on Brandon Stearns. Simaz took a 2-1 lead into the third after notching a takedown. Simaz chose to start the second period down on the mat and quickly escaped to take a 3-1 advantage. The Big Red wrestler earned another takedown and cut his opponent loose looking for more points, but the Brown wrestler evaded him for the final minute. Stearns chose to start the third down on the mat, and Simaz picked up a minute of riding time before Stearns escaped. Simaz quickly earned another takedown and cut Stearns loose looking for a major decision. The rookie grabbed another takedown, and with 1:55 in riding time, won a 10-4 decision.
At heavyweight, senior Zach Hammond hit the mat to face Zach Zrada. Zrada took a 2-1 lead into the second with a takedown from which Hammond quickly escaped. Zrada earned the only point of the second with an opening escape, and Hammond took the only point of the third with the same. Zrada won a 3-2 decision to earn his teams final three points.
The Big Red will close out its dual season on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Harvard for a 2 p.m. match.
