Softball Wraps Up Stetson Invitational

DeLAND, Fla.—
The Big Red softball team lost two games on its last day of the Stetson Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Iowa played past Cornell, 5-3, in the morning, before Stetson defeated the Big Red, 10-1, in the afternoon game. Cornell moves to 8-4 for the season.

The Big Red had three hits against the seasoned Hawkeyes (20-5). Alyson Intihar, Devon March, and Ashley Garvey picked up Cornell's hits. Sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple pitched 3.1 innings allowing seven hits and four earned runs. Freshman Lauren Marx pitched two innings, and Ali Tomlinson faced two batters. Dalrymple moves to 4-1 for the season.

Iowa was led by Erin Riemersma, who went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. The Hawkeyes' designated player, Jenny Schuelke went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Amanda Zust earned the win for her team striking out three batters in four innings. Brittany Weil made the save with three strikeouts in three innings.

In the top of the first inning, Intihar opened with a single to left field. March was hit by a pitch, and Elise Menaker advanced the runners with a sac bunt. Garvey singled up the middle to drive in the Big Red's first run. March scored on a passed ball, and Cornell went up 3-0 when Garvey stole home.

Iowa grabbed back one run in the bottom of the inning when Colleen McGlaughlin homered to right field.

The Big Red retained its lead until the bottom of the fourth inning. Iowa notched five hits to score three runs and take a 4-3 lead.

Iowa would score one more run in the bottom of the sixth to secure a 5-3 win. 

Against the Hatters, the Big Red's Elise Menaker, Jessy Berkey, Marissa Amiraian and Morgan Cawley each notched hits. Devon March earned her team's only RBI. Sophomore Ali Tomlinson took the loss pitching four innings, while freshman Jenna Stoller and Nikki Dulaney each pitched an inning.

For Stetson, Amanda Lindsey struck out five Cornell batters to earn the win. Chelsey Trotto was 3-for-3 at the plate to drive in two runs. Andrea Migliori notched three RBI with one hit. Stetson improves to 13-12 for the season.

The Hatters opened the game with hot bats in the first inning. Stetson drove in three runs, and followed with one run in the third and fourth. The Hatters took a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Amiraian singled to left field, and Cawley followed with a single of her own with one out. Katie Watts pinch hit for the Big Red and loaded the bases after she was hit by a pitch. March grounded out to third base, but drove in Cornell's sole run.

Stetson scored three more runs in the sixth inning to end the game.

The Big Red will play at Bethune-Cookman for a Monday afternoon doubleheader.
