DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The Big Red softball team got back to its winning ways on Monday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader at Bethune-Cookman. Cornell won the first game, 7-2, and followed with a 5-3 victory to move to 10-4 for the season. Junior Ashley Garvey hit .500 for the day with two doubles and three RBI. Sophomore pitchers Elizabeth Dalrymple and Ali Tomlinson each earned a win.
In the Big Red's first game against the Wildcats, Cornell was led by Alyson Intihar and Elise Menaker who both went 3-for-4 at the plate. Menaker notched a double and a home run to drive in three runs. Intihar had two doubles and two RBI. Ashley Garvey notched two hits in four at bats. Sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple picked up her fifth win of the season with eight strike outs and only allowed four hits.
Bethune-Cookman's Celsey Tafoya, Sabrina Ferguson, Ashley Taylor and Liz Parrish each had one hit. Allison Garcia took the loss, but struck out 10 Big Red batters.
The Wildcats were the first team to put a run on the board in the bottom of the second when Ferguson hit a solo home run over the left field fence.
The Big Red answered in the top of the third to tie the score. Intihar led off with a double to right center field, and with two outs, Garvey singled to left field to drive her in.
The score remained tied until the top of the sixth. Meg Risica and Jessy Berkey both walked to lead off the inning. Morgan Cawley reached base on an error by the third baseman in a sac bunt attempt. Risica scored on the play. With two outs, Intihar hit a double to center field to drive in two more runs. Devon March singled to put runners on first and third, and the Big Red took a 7-1 lead when Menaker hit a home run over the center field fence.
Bethune-Cookman scored one run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Big Red held on to win 7-2.
In game two of the doubleheader, Garvey went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Risica, Berkey and March each added a hit and an RBI. Tomlinson picked up the win with four strike outs.
Parrish went 2-for-3 for the Wildcats with an RBI, while Garcia notched a hit with two RBI. Garcia also suffered the loss, striking out five.
In the top of the first inning, Intihar was hit by a pitch, and she scored off a double by Garvey. Risica was hit by a pitch, and the bases were loaded with a single by Berkey. Tomlinson followed with a single of her own to drive in another run to put the Big Red up, 2-0.
Bethune-Cookman took a 3-2 lead after the bottom of the inning. They scored their three runs off three hits and a Big Red error. The Wildcats left three runners on base.
In the top of the third, with two outs, Risica hit a home run over the left field fence to tie the game at 3-3.
Amiraian reached base in the top of the fifth on a Wildcats fielding error, and she scored when Garvey hit a double to right center field.
In the top of the sixth, Berkey was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Tomlinson grounded out. March hit a single to right field to drive in the Big Red's fifth and final run.
The Big Red will open play at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday, when it will face Rhode Island and Iona College.
