CORNELL HAS JUST CROWNED A NATIONAL CHAMPION: TROY NICKERSON (125) DEFEATED PAUL DONAHOE TO CAP AN UNDEFEATED SEASON 25-0!
6:00 pm
125: # 2
Troy Nickerson win by decision # 1 Paul Donahoe (Edinboro), 2-1
Both wrestlers started with a great deal of action at the head and hands. Nickerson shot near the edge of the mat, but the action was called back to the center. Donahoe used less than thirty seconds of injury time, and then the action returned when Donahoe deferred choice in the second, and Nickerson chose down. Nickerson quickly got to his feet, but Donahoe was able to hold on as they went to the edge of the map to return action to the center once more. Nickerson responded by standing up again quickly but could not quite escape before reaching the edge of the map. Back at center, Nickerson stood up immediately and got the escape he was looking for. Nickerson looked for a low single, but Donahoe caught the move in time to deflect it. Both wrestlers showed their offensive and defensive excellence by continuing to shoot and deflect shots by the opponent. Donahoe chose down in the third, and earned an escape eight seconds into the period. Both wrestlers circled a great deal in the third, each looking for the anticipated takedown. With a 1-1 score in regular match-time the wrestlers went into overtime. Nickerson had an early shot at the head and chest that looked like a potential takedown, but Donahoe was able to shrug him off. Nickerson had choice for the second overtime, and he chose down. On the bottom, Nickerson used some injury time but the action returned quickly. Nickerson collected a point for a technical violation for locking hands against Donahoe. The Edinboro wrestler started down for the third overtime period and was cautioned. Donahoe attempted two more escapes, but Nickerson was able to hold onto his leg and take him down to the mat for the final few seconds to keep the score 2-1.

7th Place Match- 197: Cam Simaz lose by major decision # 7 Brandon Halsey (CSU-Bakersfield), 14-4
Halsey managed a trip over Simaz to grab the first takedown. After action was moved back to center mat after going out, Halsey was able to turn Simaz on his back for two points of near fall. Simaz held a tough grip on his opponent's foot to prevent more back points, then flipped around to grab a reversal. Simaz started to tilt Halsey, but Halsey countered with a surprise reversal at the end of the period. Halsey chose down for the second and a jump to his feet earned him the escape. Simaz shot at Halsey's left leg, but the positioning yielded a stalemate. The Cornell Freshman again grabbed Halsey's left leg and again a stalemate was called. Back at neutral, Simaz had another shot, and Halsey backed away and was called for stalling. Halsey grabbed another takedown in the final moments of the period by countering a shot from Simaz. Simaz chose down for the third and tumbled for an early escape, but Halsey responded with another takedown, followed by another escape for Simaz. Simaz shot again, but good defense by Halsey prevented the takedown and action stopped outside the mat. Halsey shot back at center mat and Simaz was warned for stalling. Wrapping Simaz's chest, Halsey earned one final takedown and rode Simaz for the remainder of the match earning 2:21 of riding time and taking a final score of 4-14. The new Cornell All-American will be in 8th place for his first NCAA tournament.
12:15 pm
5th Place Match- 174: # 6
Steve Anceravage win by major decision v# 11 Quentin Wright (Penn State), 13-3
Anceravage grabbed a quick takedown and sent his opponent to his back immediately. It looked like Anceravage had Wright stuck, but was only awarded the three near fall points before Wright squirmed loose for an escape. Anceravage then took his opponent down again to his back, but Wright twisted to his belly before any additional near fall points were scored. Anceravage rode his opponent for the remainder of the period. Wright chose neutral for the second after Anceravage deferred choice. Wright shot, but Anceravage was able to counter with a quick twist to Wright's upper body to secure a takedown. The Penn State wrestler tried to stand, but Anceravage was able to throw him back down. Anceravage chose down for the third, stood up immediately, but Wright maintained a strong grip and lowered Anceravage back down. The Cornell All-American, however, grabbed a leg and managed an escape, narrowly missing a takedown of his own. Anceravage was able to takedown his opponent with a low single and Wright was awarded a point for a second stalling call on Anceravage. Anceravage almost managed another set of back points, but a potentially dangerous call sent the action back to the center. Wright got an escape by jumping up to his feet in the last few seconds, and Anceravage received his additional point for 3:39 of riding time at the conclusion of the match making the final score 13-3. Congratulations to the two-time All-American (6th, 5th) for a memorable Cornell career!
11:47 am
3rd Place Match- 157: # 3
Jordan Leen win by decision # 4 Gregor Gillespie (Edinboro), 4-0
Leen went for a leg sweep, but Gillespie defended the shot and the two returned to other action. Leen went for another leg sweep, and this time he got it, sending Gillespie to the mat. Leen then put Gillespie in a back bow trying to earn some near fall, but the referee stopped the action with a potentially dangerous call. Leen used his typical leg wrap to trap his opponent and again looked for a tilt, but the period ended before any points were scored. Gillespie chose top for the second and tumbled numerous times looking for an escape early in the period. The Cornell wrestler then spent the middle part of the period on his belly before a stalemate was called. Action restarted at center mat, but Leen did not get the escape. To start the third, Leen chose down and continued to try for an escape. Another stalemate call returned the action to center mat, and Leen was able to grab Gillespie's leg to turn him around for a reversal. Leen put Gillespie straight to his belly and tried for some backpoints before the action stopped outside the mat and the two returned to center once more. Gillespie made one final desperate effort for a reversal with a clutch on Leen's leg, but time ran out and Leen became the 3rd place winner with a final score of 4-0. Congratulations to the Three-Time All-American (8th, 1st, 3rd) for an impressive career of Cornell Wrestling!
NOTE: Both Leen and Gillespie are former National Champions and the two have 7 All-American certificates between them.

157: # 3
Jordan Leen win by decision # 7 Matt Moley (Bloomsburg), 3-1
Leen and Moley started out with a lot of action at the head and both wrestlers seemed tentative to shoot initially. Leen used 1:27 of injury time for a cut above his eye. The Cornell wrestler was warned for stalling when Moley went for a takedown at the chest and he backed out of the mat. The wrestlers started neutral for the second and Moley shot at Leen's legs, but Leen was able to wriggle free. Leen then took two shots, looking for a leg sweep both times, but was unable to secure the takedown; however, it seems like he shook up Moley a little because the Bloomsburg wrestler used his injury time up moments later. Both wrestlers continued to tie up for the rest of the period, and, still, no points were scored. To start the third, Leen chose down and grabbed the escape in the first thirty seconds. Once on their feet, Moley went for a low single, but Jordan beat him to it with a leg sweep to takedown his opponent. Moley made continuous efforts to stand, and Leen was able to throw him down several times, but, ultimately, Moley grabbed an escape. The last few seconds Moley made a desperate effort to shoot, but Leen was able to secure the win with a final score of 3-1.
174: # 6
Steve Anceravage lose by fall # 3 Brandon Browne (Nebraska), 7:18
Anceravage took down his opponent with a chest throw and was able to pound his opponent to the mat. He then had a nice tilt, but the referee did not award any near fall. The two wrestlers made it out of bounds and the action returned to center mat where Browne attempted to stand numerous times, but each time Anceravage was able to throw him back to the mat. Browne started down for the second and Anceravage was able to hold him down for 1:10, but Browne wrestled free for an escape near the edge of the mat. Anceravage started down in the third and effortlessly earned an escape at the immediate start of the period. In a quick scramble, Browne and Anceravage fought for a takedown, but Browne was able to scoop Anceravage's arms and catch him off-guard on his back for a takedown and some back points. Anceravage was able to get an escape and once on their feet he looked for a takedown, but a countershot by Browne resulted in a takedown against Steve to bring the score to 4-5. Anceravage had 1:33 of riding time, however, so he tied the match to bring it into overtime. Browne grabbed Anceravage's leg right away and threw him to his back, ultimately pinning Anceravage in 7:18 in overtime.
