Five Homers Help Softball Sweep Yale

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Big Red softball team took over sole possession of first place in the Ivy League on Tuesday afternoon after sweeping a doubleheader against Yale. The Big Red defeated the Bulldogs 4-2 in game one and followed with a 12-3 five-inning victory in game two. Cornell moves to 4-0 against the Ancient Eight and is 23-5 overall. The Big Red totaled five home runs in the two games with junior Elise Menaker earning a pair, while Jessy Berkey, Ashley Garvey and Meg Risica each notched one.

Menaker ended the day 3-for-5 with five RBI and added a double to her two home runs. Garvey was 3-for-6 with four RBI, while Berkey had three hits in five at bats for two RBI. Sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple picked up the win in game one striking out eight batters. Classmate Ali Tomlinson moves to 9-3 for the season with the victory in game two.

The Bulldogs were led by Meg Johnson who went 3-for-5 at the plate, while Katie Edwards paced the team with three RBI on two hits. Rebecca Wojciak took the loss in game one, while Deanna DiBernardi was the pitcher of record in game two.

Game One: Cornell 4, Yale 2

In the bottom of the third inning, freshman Erin Keene walked and senior Jamie Tupino came in to run. Junior Vanessa Leonhard reached on a fielder's choice and put the Big Red up 1-0 when she scored off a deep double to centerfield from Devon March.

Yale's Lauren Huddleston singled to second base with one out in the top of the fourth inning. Dalrymple struck out Edwards, but Megan Enyeart double to center to tie the game at one all.

The Big Red took back its lead in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Berkey reached base when her pop fly to leftfield was dropped, and she advanced to second. Risica drove her in with a double to leftfield.

Cornell strengthened its lead in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Intihar doubled to left. March popped up to second base, but Menaker followed with her first home run over the centerfield fence to bring the game to a 4-1 score.

Yale was looking to rally in the top of the sixth. Sloan opened with a single up the middle and Katie Yanagisawa followed with one of her own. Dalrymple regrouped and struck out Yale's leading batter, Huddleston. Edwards singled up the middle to drive in one run, but the Cornell defense ended the inning with Enyeart popping up to short stop and Johnson striking out.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Rebman singled to leftfield and Virginia Waldrop walked to put runners on first and second. Dalrymple struck Sloan out for the second out, and Intihar snagged a line drive from Yangisawa to end the game.

Game Two: Cornell 12, Yale 3

Tomlinson came in to pitch for Cornell in game two. Sloan led off the top of the inning with a double to leftfield and Yanagisawa walked. Huddleston advanced the runners with a sac bunt, and Edwards drove in two runs with a double to rightfield to give Yale its first lead of the day. Cornell ended the Bulldogs run when Intihar threw out Edwards at third, and Westman struck out.

Intihar opened the bottom of the first with a deep triple to centerfield. Menaker walked, and Garvey reclaimed the lead for Cornell with a home run to center. Berkey lengthened Cornell's lead to 4-2 with a solo home run.

In the bottom of the second with two outs, March singled up the middle and scored off a double by Menaker. Garvey singled up the middle to drive in another run.

Cornell added another run in the third inning when Berkey singled to leftfield and was driven in by a double to center by senior Nicole Cheever.

Yale was looking to rally again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Johnson opened with a single and advanced to second off a sac bunt by Westman. Rebman singled up the middle to put runners on first and third. The Bulldogs were looking to make up runs when Waldrop smashed a bouncing ground ball. Intihar made a spectacular diving play at short stop to rob the hit and throw her out at first, allowing only one run to score. Sloan grounded out to second to end the inning.

March doubled to centerfield in the bottom of the fourth, and Menaker notched her second home run deep over the centerfield fence. Garvey singled up the middle and Watts came in to run. Freshman Cassie Walisiak pinch hit and launched a double to centerfield. Berkey grounded out to second but drove in a Watts. Risica homered to centerfield to drive in two more runs to put Cornell up 12-3.

The Big Red defense held Yale scoreless in the fifth to end the game. Cornell finished the game with 14 hits, while the Bulldogs had six.

Cornell will play host to Siena on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
