Softball Completes Series Sweep of Penn With Two Victories on Sunday

The Big Red softball team completed its series sweep of Penn on Sunday afternoon winning game one 4-1, before picking up a 13-4 five-inning victory in game two. Cornell battled during a bitter cold day to further improve to 31-7 overall and 10-2 in the Ivy League. The Big Red remains in first place in the Ivy South Division.

Junior Ashley Garvey led the team with six RBI on four hits, while classmate Elise Menaker drove in four runs. Freshman Cassie Walisiak went 3-for-5 at the plate while adding two RBI. Junior Alyson Intihar added four hits in the lead-off spot for Cornell. Sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple earned the win in the first game, striking out eight batters. Ali Tomlinson grabbed the second game victory, and added two hits including a solo home run. Menaker and Garvey also notched homers for the Big Red.

Meg Krasne led Penn with three hits and two RBI, including a home run in game two. Sarah Patrick, Alisha Prystowsky and Keiko Uraguchi all added two hits for the Quakers. Jess Lupardus suffered the loss in game one, while Cailyn Hennessy was the losing pitcher in game two.

Game One: Cornell 4, Penn 1

The two teams were scoreless in game one until the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Walisiak walked, and Intihar advanced her to second with a single to left field. Devon March singled up the middle to drive in the Big Red's first run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Walisiak singled to left field and Marissa Amiraian came in to run on first base. Intihar advanced her with a sac bunt. March reached base on a fielding error, and the bases were loaded when Menaker singled to right field. Garvey singled to drive in two runs and advanced to second on the throw to put Cornell up, 3-0.

Dalrymple struck out the first Penn batter in the top of the sixth. Prystowsky singled to centerfield and advanced to second when Jamie Boccanfuso grounded out to second. Wolfe singled up the middle to drive in Penn's lone run.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Vanessa Leonhard was hit by a pitch. Walisiak doubled to center to drive in the Big Red's fourth and final run of the game.

Cornell totaled eight hits, while Penn had seven.

Game Two: Cornell 13, Penn 4 (Five Innings)

Intihar and March opened the second game with singles to right and left field, respectively. Menaker quickly put Cornell up by three runs with a home run deep over the right field fence. Garvey singled to left field before Chelsea Ott came in to pitch for Penn. Meg Risica walked and Berkey singled to left field to drive in Cornell's fourth run.

In the top of the second, March reached base on a fielding error by Penn and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Big Red notched two more runs when Garvey homered over the centerfield fence. Risica walked and stole second base. Berkey hit a single, before Leonhard doubled to center to drive in two more runs. Walisiak followed with a single, allowing Leonhard to score and put Cornell up, 9-0.

March walked to open the bottom of the third and stole second base. Menaker doubled to centerfield to drive her in.

In the top of the fourth, Prystowsky singled. With two outs, Krasne hit a ball to right field and it was carried in the wind over the right field fence for a home run.

Tomlinson opened the bottom of the inning by launching a hard-hit home run over the centerfield fence. Cheever entered the game and singled to right field. She advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Walisiak reached on a Penn error. Intihar singled to load the bases. March looked to have a single of her own, but Cheever was tagged out at home. Garvey singled up the middle to drive in two more runs and give Cornell a 13-2 advantage.

Sarah Patrick opened the top of the fifth with a single, and she advanced with a single by Uraguchi. Bridget McDugall grounded out to Tomlinson to drive in a run, and Uraguchi scored on a passed ball. With two outs, Boccanfuso grounded out to Tomlinson to end the game after five innings.

The Big Red will play a midweek non-conference doubleheader at Syracuse on Wednesday. Cornell will return to Ivy action next weekend to play four games at Columbia.
