Dalrymple Breaks Big Red Single Game Strikeout Record, While Softball Splits with Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y.—
The Big Red softball team split a doubleheader with Columbia on Saturday afternoon. Cornell won the first game, 6-0, but the Lions bounced back in game two to pick up an 8-2 victory. Sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple struck out 15 Columbia batters in the first game to break a Big Red single-game school record. Cornell moves to 32-10 overall and 11-3 in the Ivy League to remain in first place in the Ivy South Division, while Columbia is 13-27 and 3-11 against the Ancient Eight.

With her 15 strikeouts, Dalrymple improves to 14-3 for the season. Junior Ashley Garvey led the Big Red at the plate with four hits, including two doubles, to hit .571 for the day. Senior Meg Risica had a team-high three RBI on three hits with one home run. Marissa Amiraian and Elise Menaker also had one RBI apiece. Sophomore Ali Tomlinson pitched for Cornell in game two and notched six strikeouts.

The Lions were led by Jackie Ecker and Dani Pineda with two hits apiece. Pineda notched three RBI, while Chantee Dempsey drove in four runs and had a home run. Jessica Rakonza took the loss in game one, while Erica Clauss picked up the win in game two.

In game one, Devon March walked before Elise Menaker followed with a double to centerfield to drive in Cornell's first run. With two outs, Risica hit her sixth home run over the season over the left field fence to put the Big Red up, 3-0.

In the top of the sixth, freshman Cassie Walisiak opened with a single to left field and Amiraian came in to pinch run. Alyson Intihar was hit by a pitch. Senior Jaime Tupino pinch hit for Cornell and advanced the runners with a sac bunt. With two outs, Garvey singled to center to drive in two more runs.

Senior Jessy Berkey led off the seventh inning with a double to right centerfield. Amiraian tripled to right center to bring Cornell to a final 6-0 win.

Dalrymple's 15 strikeouts broke the Cornell record of 14 that was previously set by Tomlinson last season. Dalrymple held Columbia to only two hits. The Big Red totaled 12 hits for the game.

In game two in the top of the first, Intihar walked, and March reached on a fielder's choice. Menaker followed with a walk and Garvey was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Risica bunted to drive in a run for Cornell to give her team an early lead.

In the top of the third, Garvey singled down the leftfield line to lead off the inning and advanced to second base. Risica walked. Berkey fouled out to second, and Garvey scored on a Columbia fielding error.

In the bottom of the inning, Keli Leong reached base on a Cornell fielding error. She advanced to second on a sac bunt by Tulig. Pineda singled to center to drive in Columbia's first run of the day.

In the next inning, Dempsey gave the Lions' its first lead of the day with a three-run homer.

The Lions sealed their win in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits.

The Big Red totaled eight hits for the game, but left 10 runners on base in the loss. Columbia had six hits in the win. Clauss earned the win with two strikeouts in five innings. Maggie Johnson pitched the last two innings for Columbia.

Cornell and Columbia will play another doubleheader on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12:30 p.m.
