LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- The Cornell baseball team extended its winning streak to three games with a victory over Siena in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday by a 15-3 score, but the Big Red dropped the second game, 7-4. The split sends Cornell to 13-19 on the year, while Siena moves to 9-29.
The Cornell offense banged out 26 hits on the day, led by a 5-for-8 performance from
Brian Billigen. Four others had three hits, while Billigen,
Scott Hardinger and
Jadd Schmeltzer both scored three runs on the day.
Mickey Brodsky drove in five runs, with
Nate David knocking in four.
Matt Hill got the win in game one, while
Dan Lea took the loss in game two.
In game one, Cornell wasted no time in getting on the board, scoring four runs in the top of the first. A triple by Billigen opened the onslaught, with the freshman scoring on a single by Hardinger.
Nathan Ford then hit a home run to left, and was followed by a one-out home run to left by Schmeltzer.
In the third, Cornell made the score 5-0 as Brodsky walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by
Domenic Di Ricco. Cornell added two more in the fourth on a two-run single by Brodsky, and
Brandon Lee knocked home
Matt Langseth in the fifth to make the score 8-0.
Siena got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Hill allowed a two-run home run to center, but the Big Red responded in a big way in the sixth. Brodsky drove in one run and Di Ricco hit a double to right center to score another pair of runs. After Siena got a run back in the bottom of the sixth,
Nate David drove in four on one swing of the bat, hitting a grand slam to left for the 15-3 margin.
Hill worked five innings, allowing three runs on three hits and five walks with four strikeouts.
Will Keehn worked two innings of relief, allowing one hit and two walks.
In game two, Cornell took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, as
Adam Jacobs scored on a passed ball and Brodsky hit a two-run single to score Billigen and Ford. Siena rallied in the fourth inning, scoring four runs, three of them unearned, as the Saints sent nine men to the plate.
Frank Hager then had an RBI single in the fifth to knot the score at four, but the Saints took the lead for the final time with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Again, the Saints sent nine men to the plate in the inning, with a home run, RBI single and a wild pitch plating the three runs.
Patrick Lewicki had an outstanding outing to start the game, working three hitless innings with one walk and one strikeout.
Taylor Wood worked the fourth, allowing four runs, but only one earned, on four hits and a walk.
Dan Lea came on to start the fifth and was tagged with the loss in just one-third of an inning, allowing three runs on two hits.
Stephen Osterer worked the final two-thirds of the inning, retiring both batters he faced, and
Brian Billigen worked a perfect sixth.
Cornell is next in action on Friday, opening up the decisive four-game series against Princeton to decide the Ivy League Gehrig Division crown. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon on Friday in Princeton, N.J.
