Hot Bats Help Softball Notch Two Five-Inning Wins Over Ithaca College

ITHACA, N.Y.—
The Big Red softball team swept cross-town opponents Ithaca College on Wednesday night in a non-conference doubleheader. Cornell won both games in five innings, notching a 10-0 victory in game one and followed with an 11-3 win in game two. The Big Red tallied three home runs in the second game off the bats of Alyson Intihar, Ashley Garvey and Nicole Cheever. The Big Red improved to 36-10, while Ithaca College moves to 22-12.

Intihar led the Big Red at the plate going 5-for-7 with a home run and three doubles. The junior played shortstop and first base. With 11 total bases, she had a 1.571 slugging percentage and four RBI. Garvey went 4-for-6 with three RBI. Sophomore Ali Tomlinson drove in three runs in the first game while picking up the win on the mound. Senior Jessy Berkey, Cheever and freshman Morgan Cawley each notched two RBI. Freshman Lauren Marx earned the win in game two.

Ithaca College was led by Noster, Ryan and Lillie who each had two hits. Eichel, Barger and Guzman each had an RBI. Lillie took the loss in game one, while Brook was the pitcher of record in game two.

In game one, Tomlinson retired the first three Bombers' batters to start things off well for the Big Red. In the bottom of the inning, Intihar led off with a single right up the middle and moved to second base off a sac bunt by March. Elise Menaker singled to put runners on first and third. Intihar scored on a passed ball, and Menaker crossed home for Cornell's second run off a single by Risica.

In the bottom of the third, March opened with a single to right field, but was out at second when Menaker reached on a fielder's choice. Garvey singled up the middle, and Risica reached base on an error by the shortstop which allowed Menaker to score. Tomlinson doubled to right field to drive in two more runs for Cornell, and freshman Cassie Walisiak singled to right field to drive in one more. Intihar followed with a double to center field to put Cornell up, 8-0.

Garvey opened the bottom of the fourth with a single, and Cawley came in to run. Risica singled, and the runners advanced when Berkey grounded out to the pitcher. Tomlinson grounded out, but drove in another run for Cornell. Leonhard doubled to drive in Cornell's 10th and final run.

The Big Red held Ithaca scoreless once again in the fifth to end the game with a 10-0 victory.

Ithaca College notched its first run of the day in the first inning of game two.

In the bottom of the inning with one out, Izzy Pines walked and Menaker singled to centerfield. Garvey drove in three runs with a huge home run over the centerfield fence. With two outs, Cheever reached base on a Bombers' error, which advanced Risica to second after she walked. Cawley hit a deep triple to centerfield to drive in two runs and give Cornell a 5-1 advantage.

Intihar led off with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.

In the next inning, Cheever led off with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Cawley. With two outs, Intihar doubled to centerfield to drive in Cheever.

Ithaca College had three hits in the top of the fourth to score two runs.

In the bottom of the inning, Menaker walked and Garvey singled up the middle. Risica advanced the runners with a sac bunt and was nearly safe at first base. Berkey hit a sac fly to deep centerfield to allow Menaker to score. The Big Red took a seven run lead after Cheever hit a home run to centerfield.

The Big Red needed one run in the fifth inning to end the game. Sophomore Marissa Amiraian led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Intihar doubled to drive in the Big Red's 11th and final run of the game.

The Big Red will play its final regular season Ivy games this weekend with a four-game series against Princeton. Cornell will play at Princeton on Friday afternoon, and will have senior day on Sunday at home against the Tigers.
