THE HEAD COACH
Coach
Terry Cullen is now in his 46th season at the helm of the Big Red program with a 162-124-7 record (.565). Cullen has been a member of the coaching staff since 1964 and officially became the
Terry Cullen Head Coach of Sprint Football in 2001.
THE CO-HEAD COACH
In August 2008, Cornell announced that
Bart Guccia would assume a majority of the on-field coaching and gameday decisions for the Big Red. Guccia is now in his sixth year with the team and has posted a 15-8 record (.652) in his new role.
ABOUT ARMY
The Black Knights, based in West Point, N.Y., have won two of its first three games of the year. Army was the CSFL co-champion last season with Penn, finishing at 4-1 in league play. This season, the Black Knights have defeated Mansfield and Princeton in league games but fell to Navy in their non-league season opener.
THE SERIES WITH ARMY
Cornell has played Army 71 times with the first game being played in 1957. The Black Knights hold a commanding 53-18 advantage in the series, though Cornell won last year by a 20-10 margin. Cornell's victory last year came despite having nine fewer first downs, fewer rushing yards and fewer passing yards than Army. Cornell scored 20 consecutive points in the middle of the game, and Army could not come back late.
SCOUTING THE BLACK KNIGHTS
In three games this season, Army has outscored its opponents 133-58, though that margin is considerably more lopsided when you ignore the loss to Navy. In its two wins, the Black Knights have outscored the opposition 113-20. Army is a averaging nearly 140 yards per game on the ground and a very impressive 367 yards per game through the air. The Black Knights defense has allowed an average of 271 yards per game, has intercepted four passes and forced eight fumbles.
Quarterback Javier Sustaita has tossed 14 touchdown passes and tallied 993 passing yards. Cody Nyp has caught nine of those touchdowns, and leading rusher Marquis Morris is averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Noah Currie leads all Army players with 25 tackles and two recovered fumbles.
A WIN OVER THE BLACK KNIGHTS WOULD...
…help Cornell keep pace for second in the league behind idle Navy…bring Cornell's winning streak against Army to two games…give the Big Red a two-game winning streak against Army for the first time since 2007-08.
LAST TIME OUT
Cornell dominated visiting Princeton on Sept. 23, exploding for seven touchdowns and 49 total points while holding the Tigers to just seven points. Princeton, which has not won a CSFL game in five years, started the contest with a successful onside kick but was out of luck after that. Quarterback
Brendan Miller, returning from an injury against Post, threw for 211 yards and four touchdowns. The defense allowed a mere 159 yards and had four interceptions.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
The Big Red had two players named CSFL players of the week for their efforts in the Princeton game. Defensive back
Chris Sitko led the Big Red defense with 11 tackles was was part of the effort that kept Princeton to just 159 yards. Punter
Chase Funderburk made the most of his four punts, routinely pinning Princeton back inside its own 20-yard line with successful coffin corners. Funderburk averaged 32.8 yards per punt, but his specialty in the game was placement. He kicked balls out of bounds inside the Princeton 10-yard line twice, one of those times leading directly to a Cornell interception returned for a touchdown.
POST LOSS
The Big Red controlled most of its game against Post on Sept. 23, but the team fell apart in the fourth quarter. The visiting Eagles ruined Cornell's home opener by scoring 19 points in the final period and coming back for a 25-20 win after trailing the entire game. Cornell was led on offense by quarterback Tim Bruhn, who replaced Miller, and receiver
Abe Mellinger. But four turnovers in the game ultimately undid the Red's efforts in a sloppy, wet night when even sure-footed kicker
John Rodriguez missed two field goals of 45 yards.
SEASON-OPENING WIN
Cornell kicked off its season with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in Pennsylvania against Mansfield. The Mounties held a 23-20 advantage entering the fourth quarter before the Big Red scored 17 unanswered points to win 37-23.
Abe Mellinger started the fourth quarter with a 50-yard touchdown catch from quarterback
Brendan Miller. Kicker
John Rodriguez followed with a 31-yarder to increase Cornell's lead to a touchdown, and then
Michael Monahan finished things off with a 45-yard touchdown reception.
CATCHING THEM OFF GUARD
Mellinger, in his first three games with the Big Red, has caught a team-high 12 passes for 257 yards and six touchdowns, a number that tops the CSFL. He is Cornell's scoring leader with 36 points, eight points ahead of kicker John Rodirugez. Mellinger also claims 31 punt return and 71 kick return yards, giving him 359 total yards on the year that is more than double the team's next highest. His 21.4 yards per catch is higher than the top five receiving yards leaders in the CSFL. Mellinger, a transfer from Junianta College, calls Ronks, Pa., home.
BYE WEEK BLUES
Since 2001, the Big Red is 1-6 following its bye week.
STILL NEAR THE TOP
Even though he didn't play in week two and had a bye last week, quarterback
Brendan Miller is still has the third-most passing yards in the CSFL.
NATIONAL APPEAL
The sprint football team has players from 14 different states on the roster, with New York and California having the highest representation. Twenty-four players hail from the Empire State while the Golden State has 12 players on the Big Red roster. Just one player comes from Hawaii, North Carolina and Oklahoma.
