Box Score

ITHACA, N.Y. — Sophomore Joel Lowry scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner, and the men's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Colorado College with a 3-2 triumph Saturday night at Lynah Rink.

Just like Friday night's game, special teams was the deciding factor in Saturday's contest.

After Cornell goalie Andy Iles thwarted an early flurry from the Tigers, the Big Red found itself on the power play following an elbowing minor. Cornell would need almost all of their extra-man time to find the twine as Brian Ferlin was the recipient of some puck luck for the first Big Red goal. After Ferlin started the rush in the neutral zone with a nice give-and-go play with Nick D'Agostino, Ferlin rushed in on the far wing, fired a shot into a crowd of bodies – including teammate Armand de Swardt – and saw the puck just squeak by Tigers netminder Josh Thorimbert.

Colorado College equalized on a nice indivudual effort by Charlie Taft, but the Tigers couldn't find the go-ahead goal on a power play early in the second period.

The Big Red then got a man advantage of its own, and it would convert once again. Dustin Mowrey slid the puck over to D'Agostino at the left point, who fired one along the ice with the intentions of a redirection. Joel Lowry came through the low slot and tipped one past the glove side of Thorimbert to make it 2-1.

The teams would play the next 25 minutes with tight checking and a lack of good opportunities for either squad until Lowry's second goal. Joakim Ryan fed Greg Miller at the right faceoff, who finessed a nice saucer pass around a CC defender. Lowry would get the puck on the goal line, walk out to the bottom of the faceoff circle and fire a low shot to the far side, beating Thorimbert once again.

The Cornell momentum was short-lived, though, as it only took CC 35 seconds to cut its defecit back to one.

The teams traded chances down the stretch, but a Tigers penalty at 18:39 of the third period seriously hurt the chances for a comeback, and an icing call with eight seconds left in the game all but sealed the second Cornell win of the weekend.

Iles made 21 stops on the night, which brings his save percentage to .952 on the season. The Big Red power play, which scored on three of eight chances Saturday, now has a 35.7 percent conversion rate in the early going. Cornell's penalty killing unit continues to be perfect, having killed off all eight of its opponents' power plays.

This is the first time the Big Red has started off the non-league portion of its schedule with two victories since 2006, when Cornell opened the season with victories against Robert Morris and RIT. The Big Red's attention now turns to ECAC Hockey play with an upcoming set against Colgate. Friday's game will be at Starr Rink in Hamilton, followed by a rematch the following night at Lynah.
