ABOUT THE BIG RED
The Big Red earned two hard-fought victories against Brown and Yale in its first conference weekend of the season. Cornell defeated the Bears 2-0, though the game was even closer than that until
Jillian Saulnier's empty-netter with seconds remaining.
Taylor Woods had a power play goal for Cornell and
Lauren Slebodnick had her first shutout of the season. The next day against Yale, Cornell pulled out a 3-2 win after entering the first intermission down 1-0. Saulnier again scored the game's final goal, though Saturday's was a game-winner with 4:36 gone in the third period. Cornell has been to the Frozen Four each of the last three years and will be looking to return in 2012-13.
HEAD COACH DOUG DERRAUGH
Now in his eighth season directing the Cornell women's hockey program,
Doug Derraugh has quickly brought the Big Red women to their current place among the nation's elite. Taking a program that won just four games in the season prior to his arrival, Derraugh guided the Big Red to the national title game in his fifth season and back-to-back-to-back NCAA Frozen Four appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2012, completely turning around the culture of the women's hockey program at Cornell. Derraugh, a 1991 graduate of Cornell, was the last Big Red men's hockey player to score 30 goals in a season. He earned his 120th career win at Boston University on Oct. 20 and has the second-most wins of any Cornell women's hockey coach (Bill Duthie, 135).
ABOUT PRINCETON
The Tigers, based in Princeton, N.J., are 2-2 on the year but were swept in their first conference series of the season last weekend. Dartmouth defeated the Tigers 3-1, and Harvard had an offensive explosion in a 9-1 victory over Princeton on Saturday. The Tigers' two victories this year came against RIT and Robert Morris. Princeton is led on offense by Corey Stearns' six total points. Kelly Cooke is their leading goal scorer with three. Kimberly Newell has started every game in net, and she has a goals against average of 4.10 so far.
Princeton is coached by Jeff Kampersal, now in his 16th year leading his alma mater.
THE SERIES WITH PRINCETON
Cornell and Princeton have a long-standing rivalry as members of the Ivy League and ECAC Hockey. The Big Red claimed last season's two contests by narrow margins, winning most recently 1-0 on a goal from
Rebecca Johnston in January. The teams also met in November 2011 with the Big Red earning a 3-1 win in only slightly more comfortable fashion. Cornell is currently on a six-game winning streak against the Tigers and has not lost to them since November 2008.
A WIN AGAINST PRINCETON WOULD…
…improve the Big Red's record to 5-1…start the team out 3-0 in conference play for the fourth consecutive year…be Cornell's seventh consecutive victory against the Tigers…start November with a victory for the second year in a row...be the 88th consecutive game with a goal for the Big Red.
ABOUT QUINNIPIAC
The Bobcats, based in Hamden, Conn., hold a 4-3-1 record on the season and are coming off a weekend home split against Harvard and Dartmouth. The Crimson defeated the Bobcats 2-0 on Friday night, but Quinnipiac was back with a vengeance on Saturday and put up eight goals on visiting Dartmouth. Kelly Babstock is far and away the program's leader in points with 20 on 10 goals and 10 assists. Nicole Kosta has also been scoring at a good clip, notching four goals and 11 assists for 15 points through Quinnipiac's eight games. Victoria Vigilanti remains the Bobcats' top goalie, starting five games and earning a 2.34 goals against average.
Rick Seeley is now in his fifth season leading the Bobcats.
THE SERIES WITH QUINNIPIAC
Cornell and Quinnipiac are among the newest ECAC Hockey rivals, and the Big Red has a 9-3-5 lifetime advantage over the Bobcats. The rivalry is heating up, though, as the last time these teams squared off, Cornell came away with a 5-1 win in the ECAC Hockey Semifinals. Cornell has ended the Bobcats' season each of the last two years. In last season's Tournament Semifinal,
Rebecca Johnston scored two goals while
Brianne Jenner,
Jillian Saulnier and
Alyssa Gagliardi each had a goal. The Big Red has defeated the Bobcats in six consecutive meetings.
A WIN AGAINST QUINNIPIAC WOULD…
…extend Cornell's winning streak against Quinnipiac to seven…win its third consecutive Saturday game.
REPRESENTING HER COUNTRY
Brianne Jenner will miss this weekend's contests as she travels to Finland with the Canadian National Team for the 4 Nations Cup. This annual event, featuring the national teams from the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden, will take place from Nov. 6 through Nov. 10. Canada claimed silver in last season's championship game, falling to the United States 4-3 in a shootout. This will be Jenner's third consecutive 4 Nations Cup.
MARKERS FOR MADISON
Jenner is participating in a charity this year for a young girl with brain cancer, Madison Primeau. For every goal Jenner scores, Jenner's sponsors will donate $1 to a charity to help pay Madison's medical bills. Jenner has two goals on the season so far, and her 43 sponsors mean that $86 will go to Primeau. To sponsor Jenner's charity, e-mail her at bj72@cornell.edu.
NATIONAL POLLS
Nothing if not consistent, the Big Red remains the No. 2 team in the country according to the USCHO.com and USA Today national polls this week after its three victories. Also in the national top 10 are plenty of future Cornell opponents: No. 4 Clarkson (twice), No. 5 Mercyhurst, No. 6 Harvard (twice), No. 7 Northeastern and No. 8 Boston College.
TUESDAY SUCCESS
With the victory against St. Lawrence on Oct. 23, Cornell has now claimed eight consecutive contests on Tuesday nights. Cornell's last loss Tuesday night came on Nov. 2, 2010 against Mercyhurst in a 4-3 overtime defeat.
NO SHUTOUTS
Cornell scored a goal in every game last year, something only it can say. Cornell was also the only team playing a full Division I schedule to not have a tie last year. The Big Red's streak of scoring at least one goal in a game is now 87 games long, dating back all the way to a 0-0 tie against Quinnipiac on Feb. 5, 2010.
FRESHMEN SCORERS
Of the Big Red's seven freshmen forwards and defensemen, four now have at least one collegiate point.
Anna Zorn and
Taylor Woods have two goals each while
Kelly Murray and
Jess Brown have an assist each.
SHORT-HANDED OFFENSE
The Big Red scored two shorthanded goals against Boston University on Oct. 20, marking the first time the team has tallied two short-handed goals in a game in at least nine years.
Taylor Woods scored the first to tie the game at 2-2, and
Emily Fulton struck about a minute later to give Cornell a 3-2 lead it would hold for a 5-2 victory.
HELPING GLOVE
Goalie
Lauren Slebodnick got her first career assist on Oct. 20, passing the puck to
Hayleigh Cudmore who found
Emily Fulton for Cornell's third goal. The assist was Cornell's first from a goalie in more than three years. Jenny Niesluchowski had the last goalie assist on Jan. 4, 2009 against Providence College.
IVY LEAGUE LEADERS
With victories against Brown and Yale, Cornell has taken an early lead in the Ivy League standings. Harvard also is undefeated in the league but only has one win against Princeton. Cornell has claimed the Ivy League title for the last three years.
OUTRANKING THE COMPETITION
In its last 23 games against ranked opponents from the start of the 2009-10 season until now, the Big Red holds a 16-8 record. Cornell was a very impressive 9-3 against ranked opponents in 2011-12.
