Box Score

HAMDEN, Conn. – After coming back from two-goal deficits in the third periods of its last two games, the men's hockey team couldn't fight off an identical hole on Saturday in a 4-1 loss to Quinnipiac at TD Bank Sports Center. The loss drops the Big Red to 3-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in ECAC Hockey play.

After starting off on its heels in the last three games, the Big Red turned the tide on the Bobcats by asserting itself early on – there were just no score to show for it. Quinnipiac goalie Eric Hartzell was able to come up with a handful of saves on a few scrambles off the top of his crease.

The teams combined for five power-play opportunities in the frame, including a Bobcats two-man advantage. Cole Bardreau and Joel Lowry won faceoffs to kill some of the 53 seconds – of which defensemen Nick D'Agostino and Braden Birch were entirely on the ice for – then the opportunity ended with Lowry drawing a penalty after pinning the puck along the boards for an extended period of time.

The trend of constant trips to the penalty box continued – but the stalemate did not. Quinnipiac (5-3-1, 2-0 ECAC Hockey) scored twice in the second period to take control. Cornell killed off its second two-man disadvantage – this one spanning 1:42 – but the Bobcats scored on the ensuing five-on-four to take the lead. Kellen Jones snapped a shot from the top of the left circle that found a way through traffic and into the net at the 8:03 mark.

Quinnipiac doubled its lead about seven minutes later on Ben Arnt's first goal of the season. A pass toward the high slot was knifed away by a Cornell defender, but the puck went directly into Arnt's path. He then converted on a high shot to the short side. The Bobcats continued the onslaught in the third period with Jeremy Langlois' goal off a two-on-two to take a commanding three-goal lead.

Senior forward Greg Miller then got the Big Red on the board with his third goal of the season. John Esposito picked off a clearing try near the left point, then wheeled the puck toward the slot. Miller couldn't get his stick to it, but he was able to deflect it in with his right skate. A rule new to the NCAA this season stipulates that a goal can be scored off an attacker's skate as long as there's no distinct kicking motion. Video replay confirmed that Miller's goal was good.

The Bobcats' Corey Hibbeler's closed out the scoring, handing the Big Red its first weekend sweep since the Colgate series last January.

The Big Red will return home for its next two games against Ivy League foes Harvard and Dartmouth. Friday's game against the Crimson will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network, then Saturday's tilt against the Big Green can be seen regionally on Time Warner Sports Network.
