ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell had last weekend off, and
Brianne Jenner left for Finland to compete with Hockey Canada at the 4 Nations Cup. Before the week off, the Big Red had a perfect weekend against Princeton and Quinnipiac to move to 6-1 on the year and stay perfect at 4-0 in ECAC Hockey play. Against Princeton, Cornell took a 1-0 lead into the second period, then exploded for three seconds in that frame to eventually win 4-0. The Big Red then downed Quinnipiac 4-3 in thrilling fashion, coming from behind with two goals in the third period.
Katelyn Pippy, playing the most minutes of her Big Red career, made 11 saves in relief to stymie the Bobcats. Cornell has been to the Frozen Four each of the last three years and will be looking to return in 2012-13.
HEAD COACH DOUG DERRAUGH
Now in his eighth season directing the Cornell women's hockey program,
Doug Derraugh has quickly brought the Big Red women to their current place among the nation's elite. Taking a program that won just four games in the season prior to his arrival, Derraugh guided the Big Red to the national title game in his fifth season and back-to-back-to-back NCAA Frozen Four appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2012, completely turning around the culture of the women's hockey program at Cornell. Derraugh, a 1991 graduate of Cornell, was the last Big Red men's hockey player to score 30 goals in a season. He earned his 120th career win at Boston University on Oct. 20 and has the second-most wins of any Cornell women's hockey coach (Bill Duthie, 135).
ABOUT COLGATE
The Raiders, based in nearby Hamilton, are 3-7-1 on the season and 0-3-1 in conference play. After losses of 11-0 and 7-0 to start the year against No. 1 Minnesota, Colgate bounced back with a sweep of visiting Connecticut and is coming off a 2-1 home win against RIT on Friday. The Raiders' lone league point came against Princeton on Nov. 3. Leading the way on offense is senior Brittany Phillips, who has seven points in 11 games on three goals and four assists. Jenna Klynstra also has seven points on one goal and six assists. Ashlynne Rando and Susan Allen have split time in net, with Rando playing 11 more minutes and holding a 3.60 goals against average.
The Raiders are coached by Greg Fargo who is in his first year with the team.
THE SERIES WITH COLGATE
Cornell and Colgate have a rivalry that goes all the way back to the teams' second season in 1973-74. In more recent years, the Big Red holds a seven-game winning streak against the Raiders. The teams last tied on Jan. 22, 2010, and Colgate last beat Cornell on Jan. 11, 2009. Last year, the Big Red opened its season with a 6-2 victory at Colgate where
Jillian Saulnier started her Cornell career with four goals. The Big Red then beat the Raiders 3-0 at Lynah Rink later in the year.
A WIN AGAINST COLGATE WOULD…
…improve the Big Red's record to 7-1…start the team out 5-0 in conference play for the first time since 2010 and the third time in four seasons…start a season 7-1 for the second time in three years…be the eighth consecutive win against the Raiders…move Cornell to 3-0 on Fridays…be the 90th consecutive game with a goal for Cornell.
TWO WINS AGAINST COLGATE WOULD
…improve the Big Red's record to 8-1…start the team 6-0 in conference play for the second time in three years…be the ninth consecutive win against the Raiders…move Cornell to 4-0 on Saturdays…be the 91st consecutive game with a goal for Cornell.
REPRESENTING HER COUNTRY
Brianne Jenner missed the Princeton and Quinnipiac games two weeks ago as she competed with the Canadian National Women's Team at the 4 Nations Cup in Finland. Jenner and
Rebecca Johnston '12 each had an assist in Canada's four games as the Canadians wound up losing 3-0 to the United States in the gold medal game. Jenner returns to Ithaca with a silver medal from one of the top women's hockey competitions in the world.
MARKERS FOR MADISON
Jenner is participating in a charity this year for a young girl with brain cancer, Madison Primeau. For every goal Jenner scores, Jenner's sponsors will donate $1 to a charity to help pay Madison's medical bills. Jenner has two goals on the season so far, and her 50 sponsors mean that $100 will go to Primeau. To sponsor Jenner's charity, e-mail her at bj72@cornell.edu.
NATIONAL POLLS
Nothing if not consistent, the Big Red remains the No. 2 team in the country according to the USCHO.com and USA Today national polls this week. Also in the national top 10 are plenty of future Cornell opponents: No. 3 Clarkson (twice), No. 4 Mercyhurst, No. 5 Boston College, No. 6 Harvard (twice) and No. 9 Northeastern.
TUESDAY SUCCESS
With the victory against St. Lawrence on Oct. 23, Cornell has now claimed eight consecutive contests on Tuesday nights. Cornell's last loss Tuesday night came on Nov. 2, 2010 against Mercyhurst in a 4-3 overtime defeat.
NO SHUTOUTS
Cornell scored a goal in every game last year, something only it can say. Cornell was also the only team playing a full Division I schedule to not have a tie last year. The Big Red's streak of scoring at least one goal in a game is now 89 games long, dating back all the way to a 0-0 tie against Quinnipiac on Feb. 5, 2010.
HOLDING A LEAD
The Big Red is now undefeated in its last 60 games when holding a lead after two periods. This streak dates all the way back to the national title game in 2010, which Cornell was leading 1-0 in the third period but lost 2-1 in triple overtime. The Big Red was 28-0 in 2010-11, 27-0 in 2011-12 and is 5-0 this season when leading after two periods.
GAME-SAVER
Sophomore goalie
Katelyn Pippy had the game of her young career on Nov. 3 against Quinnipiac. Coming into the game midway through the second period having played just nine minutes all of her freshman season, Pippy made 11 saves and allowed no goals as the Big Red came back for a 4-3 win over the Bobcats. Pippy nearly quintupled her career minutes and career saves in the Quinnipiac game.
EARLY IMPACT
Cassandra Poudrier missed the first five games of the season, but she was stellar in her Big Red debut against Princeton and Quinnpiac. She emerged from those games with two goals and an assist and was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for her efforts.
FRESHMEN SCORERS
Of the Big Red's seven freshmen forwards and defensemen, six now have at least one collegiate point.
Anna Zorn,
Taylor Woods and
Cassandra Poudrier have two goals each while
Jess Brown and
Kelly Murray have one goal.
Kelly Murray has two assists.
IVY LEAGUE LEADERS
With victories against Brown, Yale and Princeton, Cornell remains on top of the Ivy League standings. Harvard and Dartmouth, though, are right with the Big Red as all three teams are 3-0. Brown, Princeton and Yale are all 0-3 in the league. Cornell has claimed the Ivy League title for the last three years.
SHORT-HANDED OFFENSE
The Big Red scored two shorthanded goals against Boston University on Oct. 20, marking the first time the team has tallied two short-handed goals in a game in at least nine years.
Taylor Woods scored the first to tie the game at 2-2, and
Emily Fulton struck about a minute later to give Cornell a 3-2 lead it would hold for a 5-2 victory.
HELPING GLOVE
Goalie
Lauren Slebodnick got her first career assist on Oct. 20, passing the puck to
Hayleigh Cudmore who found
Emily Fulton for Cornell's third goal. The assist was Cornell's first from a goalie in more than three years. Jenny Niesluchowski had the last goalie assist on Jan. 4, 2009 against Providence College.
OUTRANKING THE COMPETITION
In its last 23 games against ranked opponents from the start of the 2009-10 season until now, the Big Red holds a 16-8 record. Cornell was a very impressive 9-3 against ranked opponents in 2011-12.
MEET THE CAPTAINS
The Big Red's captain this season will be senior defenseman
Lauriane Rougeau. Serving as alternate captains will be senior defenseman
Laura Fortino and junior defenseman
Alyssa Gagliardi. Cornell's four captains last season were seniors
