Box Score
DOVER, Del. — Senior
Frank Hager was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, four runs and three RBI on Sunday, and 12 different batters had hits Sunday in the baseball's team's 19-6 victory over Delaware State in the rubber game of a three-game series at Soldier Field.
Hager was followed in the order by senior
Brandon Lee and sophomore
Ben Swinford, with the Big Red's 7-8-9 hitters on the day driving in a combined nine runs. Lee was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs, and Swinford had a single and two-run double. Freshman pitcher
Brian McAfee improved to 2-0 on the season, working into the sixth inning with three earned runs allowed.
Despite the lopsided final score, the game was not without intrigue. Hager and Lee drove in runs in the second inning to stake the Big Red to a 2-0 lead, then Lee hit a sacrifice fly and Swinford followed with an RBI single to score freshmen
Matt Hall and
Kevin Tatum – who had both reached base on walks – to extend the visitors' lead to 4-1 after four. Singles runs in the fifth and sixth gave Cornell a 6-1 lead.
Freshman starter
Brian McAfee was rolling at that point, retiring nine straight after inducing a groundout for the second out of the sixth. But the Hornets started a rally behind four straight base hits, ended McAfee's day. Junior
Houston Hawley induced a pair of groundballs that should have ended the threat, but a couple of errors allowed a run to score on both plays and cut Delaware State's deficit to 6-5. Senior
Rick Marks came on and, after walking a batter to load the bases, he got an inning-ending groundout to short.
Cornell (9-2) then put the game away by batting around in each of the last three innings, despite emptying its bench to replace eight of the nine starting batters. Senior
Marshall Yanzick also had a one-run single in the eight inning, his second RBI of the day, to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
The Big Red continues its nine-game Spring Break trip with games Tuesday and Wednesday evening at Virginia Tech. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
