ITHACA, N.Y. — Greg Miller scored two goals, including a short-handed tally on a breakaway, to help the men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer on Friday night at sold-out Lynah Rink. Junior goalie Andy Iles made 29 saves for the win, which keeps Cornell (10-13-3, 6-10-3 ECAC Hockey) unbeaten in its last three games.

The Big Red got going early as Miller cashed in at 8:33 of the first period off of an RPI (14-12-5, 9-7-3 ECAC Hockey) turnover in the corner. Sophomore forward Brian Ferlin got a piece off a pass from an RPI defender that went straight to Miller in the slot, and he had plenty of time to pick his spot and beat RPI goalie Jason Kasdorf stick-side.

Cornell would double its lead just over a minute later when sophomore Joel Lowry put away his 10th goal of the season. Axell cleanly won a faceoff to Kasdorf's right back to Nick D'Agostino, who shoveled the puck to Jacob MacDonald at the right point. His shot was deflected by Axell in the slot, but saved by Kasdorf. Vince Mihalek tracked down the rebound and got off another shot that was stopped by Kasdorf, but the puck trickled behind the goalie and allowed Lowry to convert from short range.

Miller put away his second of the night and team-leading 12th of the season early on in the second period, when he put away a shorthanded breakaway. RPI's Bo Dolan took a shot from the top of the right circle that Iles aggressively kicked away to the far side. Miller beat an RPI defender to the rebound toward the opposite, then raced in and beat Kasdorf.

The Engineers would find the score sheet late in the period, when Travis Fulton weaved his way around a couple Big Red defenders, and then beat Iles on the backhand through the five-hole for an unassisted goal at the 15:44 mark. It was the freshman's first career goal.

But that was the only shot to elude Iles. He had to be strong all period long as the Engineers held a decided edge in play, outshooting the Big Red, 17-4 – thanks in large part to having four power plays in the frame compared to Cornell's none.

The Cornell defense came to play in the third period as they only allowed six RPI shots, while staying out of the box for the entire period. John Esposito would close out the scoring with under a minute to play, as he finished off an empty-net goal from the offensive blue line. John McCarron and Joakim Ryan added assists for the Big Red on the Esposito goal. It was Ryan's team-leading 15th assist of the season.

The victory was Cornell's first at Lynah since Dec. 1, 2012. The Big Red will return to its home ice at 7 p.m. Saturday when it takes on defending ECAC Hockey champion Union on Senior Night.
