Box Score
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac scored a goal with 64 seconds left in the third period to tie the game, then Kevin Bui scored on a breakaway in double overtime to end the Cornell men's hockey season on Sunday night in an ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series.
Braden Birch and
Brian Ferlin scored the Cornell goals in the 3-2 loss, and goaltender
Andy Iles made 60 saves. It was 32nd-longest game in NCAA history.
While Quinnipiac came out with more jump at the start of Games 1 and 2, it was ninth-seeded Cornell (15-16-3) starting off hot in Game 3.
Joakim Ryan and
Dustin Mowrey leveled Quinnipiac players on the first shift of the game, setting the tone for the Big Red. On the next breakout, Ryan and Mowrey worked the puck up the right wing into the neutral zone. Quinnipiac's Clay Harvey got a stick on it, poking it into empty space along the Cornell blue line in the middle of the ice. Birch went to work from there, weaving through traffic up the middle before making a move to his backhand in front of Hartzell, ramping a shot off the crossbar and into the net to give Cornell a 1-0 lead just 48 seconds in.
The Big Red continued its grinding style throughout the period, though Quinnipiac (26-6-5) mustered a slight lead in shots on goal, 10-9. Iles' best save came with an outstretched left leg to deny Connor Jones at 12:08. Cornell had a couple of near misses on its second of two power plays in the period.
Greg Miller hit the post on a chance at 16:36, then an apparent
John McCarron goal off a scramble at 18:04 was waved off because of a premature whistle from the referee standing behind the net.
The Bobcats gained momentum in the second period, drawing three power plays – all of which the Big Red penalty killers were equal to. But Quinnipiac did manage to briefly tie the game after Zach Tolkinen's shot from the center point eluded five bodies in the slot, then Iles, for an unassisted goal at 9:44.
That deadlock was short-lived, as Cornell forward
Brian Ferlin answered with his own unassisted goal 64 seconds later. Quinnipiac was attempted to break out up the left wall, but a turnover allowed Ferlin to enter the zone. He beat his defender up ice, then zipped a shot over Hartzell's catching glove from the right circle for his 10th goal of the season.
The Big Red was a perfect five-for-five on the night, which came in handy as it salted away the third period defending a one-goal lead. Quinnipiac eventually pulled Hartzell for an extra attacker in a last-ditch effort to create a tying goal.
It worked. Cornell converged on a bouncing puck near the blue line in its own zone, trying to clear the zone. The Bobcats ended up swatting the puck along the wall and below the goal line, creating a unique two-on-one from behind the net. Clay Harvey emerged to the left side of Iles and had his initial stuff attempt stopped, but he was able to jam the rebound under Iles to tie the game at two with 1:04 remaining in regulation.
That led the game to its first overtime, which passed with the team combining for 23 shots on goal, but no winner. Connor Jones had a few dangerous opportunities for Quinnipiac, but Iles was equal to each of them – including a shot on the rush from the right faceoff dot at 6:25 and a similar shot from the opposite side about 10 minutes later.
The Big Red came within inches of winning the game 42 seconds into the second over when McCarron's shot pinged off the crossbar. The top-seeded Bobcats, ranked No. 1 in the nation for five consecutive weeks, then won the game later in the frame when Bui poked a puck around a Cornell defenseman at the blue line, then skated in toward Iles before sliding in a backhanded shot along the ice.
Iles' 60 saves was just one of the program record for the most in a single game, with 45 of his saves coming in the third period and the two overtimes. John Detwiler was the first Cornell goalie to record 61 saves in a game, on Feb. 23, 1959 against Harvard, then Brian Hayward also stopped 61 shots in a game vs. Yale on March 3, 1982.
