Brown Big Red HeadlinesCornell picked up one of its biggest victories of the season to-date when the squad routed No. 6 Boston University by a 6-2 margin on Tuesday evening at Lynah Rink. While opening puck drop was pushed back over an hour because of a technical issue with the Zamboni, the delay did little to slow down the Big Red once the teams finally hit the ice. Cornell tallied twice in the opening 20-minutes and added three more goals in the third period to at one point establish a 6-0 lead over the nationally ranked foe.
Brianne Jenner completely dominated the game - having a hand in five of the six goals - including a sensational goal to open the scoring at 14:09 of the first period. She finished with a goal and four assists to become just the fourth player ever to record 200 career points at Cornell.
Emily Fulton added two goals and an assist, while
Paula Voorheis continued her excellent run of play, finishing with 29 saves on 31 Boston University shots.
Morgan Richardson,
Jess Brown and
Erin O'Connor also had goals in the contest.
About Head Coach Doug Derraugh '91Derraugh enters his 10
th season at the helm of the Cornell women's ice hockey program. Returning to his alma mater before the 2005-06 season, he quickly transformed a program that posted only four wins in the season prior to his appointment into a consistent presence in ECAC Hockey and on the national stage. The Cornell program continues to grow under the guidance of the veteran coach. In 2013-14, he led the program to its fourth ECAC Hockey Tournament title over the last five seasons. All five of the Big Red's NCAA Tournament appearances have come under his leadership. Derraugh has twice been named ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year, most recently during the 2012-13 regular-season and tournament championship season. He is the winningest coach in the history of the program with a 177-107-24 record at Cornell. He returns both excellent assistant coaches
Danielle Bilodeau '01 (ninth season) and
Edith Racine (sixth season) in 2014-15.
Bulldog HeadlinesYale enters Friday's matchup with a three-game losing streak to drop its record to 4-6 in ECAC Hockey play. After stringing together three consecutive victories to move into the middle of the conference pack, the squad has struggled against the cream of the ECAC Hockey crop. The Bulldogs have been limited to one goal each of the last three games in losses to Harvard, Princeton, and Quinnipiac. Most recently, Yale dropped a pair of road contests at Princeton and Quinnipiac by identical 4-1 finals. Eden Murray scored the lone goal in the team's last contest, but could not contain Quinnipiac freshman Taylar Cianfarano who scored a hat trick. Jamie Haddad continues to pace the squad with 14 points and is tied for the team lead with six goals. The Bulldogs boast a balanced attack with eight players recording double-digit points on the season. Jaimie Leonoff has posted a solid season as the Bulldogs primary goaltender. While her record is just 6-8-1 she boasts solid peripherals with a 2.76 goals against average and .914 save percentage.
The Series Against Yale…Cornell has dominated the all-time series against Yale with 53 wins – 13 losses – and one tie. The Big Red is a perfect 10-0-0 in the last 10 matchups against the Bulldogs, which includes a 5-0-0 mark at Ingalls Rink. Cornell has outscored Yale 20-to-1 in those matchups with the lone Bulldog goal coming in a 6-1 Cornell victory in 2011-12. Cornell's first meeting with Yale took place in the Ivy League tournament near the conclusion of the 1975-76 season. The Big Red defeated the Bulldogs 10-1.
Last Matchup Against the Bulldogs…Cornell blew past Yale in a 6-2 victory at Lynah Rink on Nov. 15, capping a big rebound weekend after starting the season 0-4. Five different players tallied goals for the Big Red, led by a pair of markers from
Taylor Woods. The Big Red jumped out to an early lead with two goals in the opening 4:06 of play.
Morgan Richardson and
Sarah Knee both tallied from the blue-line. The Bulldogs answered with a goal from Courtney Pensavalle just 19 seconds after the Knee marker to stem the tide. Cornell came out with renewed energy in the middle frame tallying two more on Woods first of the game and
Erin O'Connor's powerplay marker. The Big Red would add two more powerplay goals in the third period from
Jillian Saulnier and
Taylor Woods, before Jaimie Haddad capped the scoring with a powerplay goal of her own.
Bear HeadlinesBrown has struggled mightily this season, entering the weekend with a 1-9 mark in ECAC Hockey play and a 4-13 record overall. After winning three-of-four to start the month of November, the squad has dropped nine of its last 10 contest including seven consecutive games since beating Providence 2-1 in the Mayor's Cup on Nov. 28. Last weekend the Bears fell 3-0 on the road at Quinnipiac and stumbled to a 5-1 loss at Princeton. In its most recent home weekend, the Bears fell to Harvard 6-0 and Dartmouth 5-1. The squad has played much tougher in the friendly confines of Meehan Auditorium, posting a 4-5 record, compared to a 0-8 record on the road. Kaitlyn Keon continues to lead the squad with 14 points and eight goals.
The Series Against Brown…Cornell leads the all-time series with Brown 45-34-8. The Big Red has dominated the Bears over recent seasons. Since 2007-08, Cornell owns a 17-1-1 record against Brown and has won 15 straight matchups in the series. During that stretch Cornell has marked a 7-1-0 record against Brown at Meehan Auditorium since 2006-07, averaging 3.75 goals per game while allowing just seven goals total over those eight matchups. The Big Red has shutout the Bears in four of the last eight contests played at Meehan Auditorium.
Last Matchup Against the Bears…Cornell handled Brown relatively easily in the opening game of the series on Nov. 14, beating the Bears 5-1 at Lynah Rink.
Brianne Jenner and
Kaitlin Doering each tallied a goal in the opening 4:46 of the game to stake the Big Red to the early 2-0 lead. Brittany Moorehead answered for Brown to halve the deficit at 13:23 of the first period. The score would remain the same until the third period when
Brianne Jenner reestablished the two goal lead on the powerplay. Jillain Saulnier salted the contest away with the final two goals - the second coming unassisted - to help score Cornell's first victory of the season following a 0-4 start.
Dynamic DuoCornell seniors
Brianne Jenner and
Jillian Saulnier have taken their game to another level in recent contests. The duo exploded for huge weeks, leading the Big Red to a 3-0-1 finish to the year 2014 in one its tougher four-game stretches of the season. Jenner posted 11 points (2g-9a), while Saulnier added eight points (3g-5a). When both players are rolling it is truly a sight to behold as the pair can take over games. This was evidenced best in the Big Red's rout of then-sixth ranked Clarkson at Cheel Arena. The pair combined for three goals in 3:23 – each scoring a shorthanded goal – to almost instantly change a 1-0 deficit into a commanding 3-1 lead. The outburst sparked the rest of the squad, as the Big Red would go on to tally five more times, with the pair having a hand in seven of the eight goals scored on the night. Jenner started off 2015 with a pair of powerplay goals in the 3-3 tie against St. Lawrence, while Saulnier added an assist on the second Jenner powerplay tally.
Poll PositionWith the fantastic 3-0-1 week, which included victories over ranked Clarkson and vote getter St. Lawrence, as well as a tie against ranked Mercyhurst, Cornell found itself at the bottom of the polls released by USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine and the USCHO. The big week also helped Cornell make its first appearance in the Pairwise rankings used to help determine at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament. Cornell briefly jumped back into the top-10 of the USCHO.com poll last week, but the pair of ties over the weekend dropped the squad back into the first team in the receiving votes category of the poll. Cornell has remained steady in that same position of the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll over the past few releases. The emphatic victory over Boston University figures to give the squad a boost in the next release of the polls. The Big Red currently sit 13th in the latest Pairwise standings following the demolition of the sixth-ranked Terriers. The squad figures to have a chance to improve that standing in the coming weeks.
Free HockeyCornell has shown a proclivity for giving its fans some free hockey in recent games. The Big Red went 65 minutes without determining a victor in both contests over the weekend. Over the last seven games the team has gone to overtime three times with all three coming in the friendly confines of Lynah Rink. The last time that Cornell went to overtime in back-to-back games was the final two games of the 2009-10 NCAA Frozen Four, when the squad bested Mercyhurst 3-2 in the semifinal game, before falling in three overtimes 3-2 to Minnesota-Duluth in the championship game. The last time the Big Red earned back-to-back ties came one season earlier during the stretch run of the 2008-09 regular season when the squad tied Quinnipiac 4-4 and Princeton 2-2 with both games coming on the road.
Killin' ItCornell has been sensational on the penalty kill this season and has been especially strong in recent games. While the unit has killed penalties at a 83.3% clip for the season, it has held the opposition scoreless on 23 of the last 25 chances dating back to the beginning of December. The unit went 9-of-10 over the weekend, which included a huge kill of a five-minute major in the waning minutes against Clarkson on Saturday. The penalty kill hasn't just been a positive in the defensive zone, but has also been a boon to the Big Red in the offensive end as well. Cornell has tallied three goals while playing a player down over the last five games, which includes
Hanna Bunton's game-tying goal against St. Lawrence on Friday. Overall, the Big Red has scored five times shorthanded, while it has allowed opponents 13 powerplay goals total on the year.
All Gold EverythingBrianne Jenner returns to East Hill for her senior season in 2014-15 and she's bring some hardware with her. The Big Red captain won a gold medal as a member of the Canadian National Team that defeated the United States 3-2 in overtime in the gold medal game of the XXII Olympic Winter Games held in Sochi, Russia. Although Jenner was one of the youngest members of Team Canada in the Olympics, she had a monumental impact in winning Canada's fourth straight gold medal. After the United States held a 2-0 lead through 56-minutes, Jenner sparked the furious Canadian comeback in the final 3:30, firing home a shot through heavy traffic in front of the USA net. Canada would go on to score the tying goal in the final minute, before ending it with a power play marker halfway through the first overtime session to complete the comeback.
Coach CanadaWhile head coach
Doug Derraugh has been a fixture as the bench boss for the Big Red for the last nine seasons, he will also wear another coaching cap in 2014-15. This past summer, Hockey Canada announced that Derraugh will serve as the head coach for the Canada National Women's Team for the first year of the new Olympic cycle following the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, this past year. He brings a wealth of experience to the position and will be quite familiar with team operations after serving as an assistant coach on the Canadian National Team that won the gold medal at the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship. Derraugh is expected to miss minimal game action for the Big Red; however, associate head coach
Danielle Bilodeau '01 and assistant coach
Edith Racine will be more than capable to step in if a conflict does arise.
4 Nations CupCornell had a big presence at the 4 Nations Cup that was hosted at Kamloops, British Columbia. In addition to Derraugh being the bench boss for Team Canada, seven current and former Big Red players participated at the event. Current team members
Jillian Saulnier and
Brianne Jenner had huge impacts at the tournament for Team Canada. Saulnier (1-0 – 1pt) scored the game-winning goal in Canada's 2-0 opening game victory over Sweden, while Jenner (0-1 – 1pt) scored the lone goal in the shootout of Canada's 3-2 victory over the United States in the gold medal game. Former Cornellians Rebecca Johnston '12 (3-0 – 3pts), Laura Fortino '13 (0-2 – 2pts), Lauriane Rougeau '13 (0-1 – 1pt), and
Jessica Campbell '14 (3gp) also had excellent tournaments for the Canadian team.
Alyssa Gagliardi '14 also appeared in one game on the blue line for the United States. The tournament victory was Derraugh's first at the helm of the national team.
Winning-TimeCornell has been the winningest program in ECAC Hockey over the last five seasons. The Big Red has averaged over 26 wins per season in compiling a 133-29-10 (.802) record since 2009-10. Cornell won the regular-season title four of those five years with the stretch of four straight coming to an end last season. The next closest ECAC Hockey squads in terms of recent wins are Harvard and Clarkson. The Crimson have amassed a 106-42-17 (.694) record, while the Golden Knights check-in with a 118-54-21 (.666) record. Cornell looks to have the ball rolling after an impressive weekend sweep of Brown and Yale.
Fast Start for FultonSenior right wing
Emily Fulton has gotten off to a torrid start on the offensive end this season. She is second on the Big Red in points and tied for first in goals with a 9-12 – 21 line through the first 16 games of the year. She has collected at least one point in three of her last four games, after suffering a small scoring drought around Thanksgiving. She posted her eighth multi-point game of the season on Tuesday against Boston University with a season-high two goals and assist in the 6-2 pasting of the Terriers. She currently is tied for fifth in the conference for points (21), while she's tied for eighth in both goals and assists. She ranks third in ECAC Hockey and 12th nationally with a 1.31 points per game average. She trails just Jenner's 1.79 and Saulnier's 1.36 point per game marks amongst ECAC Hockey players. She has recorded a multi-point game in half of her contests played this season, while she notched her first powerplay goal of the year on Tuesday.
Century MarkWith her two point effort in the victory over St. Lawrence, Fulton reached the century mark for career points. Her 99th point came on an excellent pass on a tic-tac-toe play to set up
Jillian Saulnier on the backdoor for a tap-in goal to net a 3-2 lead. Her 100th point came on a sinister wrist shot from the right circle that beat Saints net-minder Carmen MacDonald top shelf to ice the game.
O'Connor's OutburstFreshman defender
Erin O'Connor has been an immediate contributor on a Big Red blue-line which saw significant attrition from last year's ECAC Hockey title squad. The young blue-liner had a excellent final week of 2014, posting at least one point in each game, which included multi-point (1g-1a) efforts against Syracuse and Clarkson. The big week netted O'Connor her second ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week award on the season. She has now recorded six multi-point games on the year. She is fourth on the team in points (17) and third in assists (12). She currently ranks first in points, assists, goals (5) and power-play goals (3) among all Division I freshmen blue-liners. She is tied for seventh nationally in points among all defenders regardless of class year.
Big Night for BrownThe third year winger has enjoyed a breakout season for the Big Red. Although recognized more often for her hard work as an energy player on the forecheck, Brown has been a consistent presence on the score sheet for the squad this season. She enters the weekend with a 5-7 – 12 line, setting new career highs for goals, assists and points for a season. With her goal and assist against Boston University she set new career highs for goals and assists in a season. She saved her best for Cornell's biggest game of the year to-date at then-sixth ranked Clarkson. She netted her first career hat trick and a four-point night overall in the Big Red's blasting of the Golden Knights.
Monthly AwardsThe Big Red has been no stranger to ECAC Hockey weekly awards, but two players did one better by earning monthly recognition from the league.
Brianne Jenner was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Month for December, while freshman blue-liner
Erin O'Connor earned ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month honors. The two have been hotter than wildfire over recent contests and will be relied upon heavily this weekend.
Joltin' JennerThe center has not disappointed and seems to be hitting her stride as the conference season begins to heat up. She posted a huge 2-9 – 11 line over her last four games of 2014 and currently is first on the team with 25 points (9g-16a) through 14 games played this season. She posted an incredible finish to 2014, collecting two goals and five assists in the contests against Clarkson and St. Lawrence, which included a game-changing performance on the penalty kill to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 advantage against the Golden Knights. She earned ECAC Hockey Player of the Week honors for the excellent showings. Jenner has also really come on strong as the Big Red's top faceoff option. She currently sits at 54.6% on the season with 177 faceoff wins in 324 opportunities. With a strong finish, Jenner has a legitimate chance to finish in the top-three on the program's all-time lists for points, goals, and assists. She posted a huge five point game (1g-4a) in the 6-2 victory over Boston University, in doing so becoming the fourth Cornell player in program history to record 200 career points.
Sensational SaulnierSaulnier has also heated up since being paired with Jenner on the team's top line. She marked a goal and assist in the Big Red's 6-2 victory over the Orange. She continued the run against Clarkson, getting the Big Red on the board on a shorthanded breakaway to tie the game at 1-1. She later made a spectacular no-look backhand pass right to the stick to
Brianne Jenner, while face down on the ice, to set up the Big Red's second goal on the penalty kill. She currently ranks 10th in NCAA Division I in points per game (1.36), while she ranks second in ECAC Hockey, trailing just Jenner's mark of 1.79. She currently is tied for ninth in the conference with 19 points. Similar to Jenner, Saulnier is also creeping up the all-time lists in several categories and will likely challenge for top-five all-time rankings in several categories. She has collected three assists over her last three contests, including a pair in the 6-2 victory over Boston University.
Career Numbers Watch*
Brianne Jenner currently sits in fourth place on the all-time list in career points (203), third in assists (116), and tied for fifth in goals (87).
