PHILADELPHIA. – The Big Red fencing team opened the 2015 portion of its schedule with a pair of victories at the Philadelphia Invitational, defeating NJIT and UNC this afternoon at Penn's Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center.
Cornell dominated the Highlanders, 24-3, and edged the Tarheels, 16-11, but fell to Northwestern (19-8), Temple (16-11), and Duke (15-12).
The foil squad led the way, going 33-12 on the day and earning victories against all except Northwestern. The squad was led by
Luby Kiriakidi (11-3) and
Angelica Gangemi (10-3) who both posted double-digit victories. Every member of the squad finished with a winning record, as
Ediona Sera went 8-4 and both
Gabriella Zusin and
Julia Telischi both finished at 2-1.
The epee squad went 22-23 overall, with wins against NJIT and UNC.
Victoria Wines was the only Big Red epee to finish with a winning record, going an impressive 13-1 for Cornel's best individual record on the day.
The sabre squad finished the day at 16-29 with a victory over NJIT.
Megan Buteau had the most win among the saber fencers, finishing 7-8 overall.
