Baseball Swept By Columbia

NEW YORK — Columbia completed a four-game sweep of the baseball team on Sunday with wins of 10-2 and 20-5 at Robertson Field.

Seniors JD Whetsel and Ryan Karl, and freshman Pierre Le Dorze had three hits apiece on the day. Cornell (9-25, 6-10 Ivy League) will return to play at 4 p.m. Wednesday in a non-league game at Binghamton.

Game 1: COLUMBIA 10, CORNELL 2 (Box Score)
Whetsel was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI double down the left-field line in the second inning. The Big Red stranded the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position that frame, then Columbia plated five in the third inning to blow the game open.

Senior Ryan Karl smacked his second home run of the weekend to lead off the sixth inning. He is the only member of the Big Red with two home runs this season.

Cornell drew five walks in the game. Senior Kellen Urbon took the loss after being chased in the third inning. Senior Zach McCulley saw his first Ivy League action of the season, working the final 3.2 innings.

Joe Falcone was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and five RBIs for Columbia, and Gus Craig was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Game 2: COLUMBIA 20, CORNELL 5 (Box Score)
The Lions broke a 2-all tie with seven runs in the fourth inning, then tacked on 11 more in the fifth with the help of Falcone's grand slam.

Freshman Pierre Le Dorze was 3-for-4 with a double for the Big Red, making the start in left field. Both of his singles drove in runs, including the second run of the second inning to give Cornell a 2-0 lead. Karl drove in the first with a double down the right-field line following a one-out walk by sophomore Tommy Wagner.

Cornell loaded the bases in the sixth, with Wagner then driving in senior Dan Morris with a single through the left side of the infield.

The Big Red's final runs came in the eighth inning. Senior Spencer Scorza hit a one-out single to left, Wagner drew his second walk of the game, and Karl pulled a single into right to load the bases. Le Dorze drove in Scorza with a base hit through the left side of the infield, then sophomore Jamie Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right that send Wagner plateward.
