CANTON, N.Y. — The men's and women's squash teams will head north to Robie Squash Center for matches against St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. Saturday. Both Big Red squads are looking to rebound from Ivy League setbacks to Columbia last Friday at Belkin International Squash Courts in Ithaca.
The Cornell men's team (3-3, 1-2 Ivy League) was tabbed 12th in the country by the College Squash Association in the last national rankings released Jan. 10. Freshman
Ben Francis has a team-best 5-1 record from the lower half of the order, joining classmate
Alex Jung as victors in the Big Red's 7-2 loss to Columbia its last time out. Cornell is 10-2 from the bottom two positions in the order, where junior
Augie Jones (3-1) and sophomore
Andrew Stone (2-0) also have winning records in the early going.
St. Lawrence (6-2) had fallen three spots to sixth in the national rankings as of Jan. 10, but the Saints are in position to move back up after a 5-4 victory last Friday at fourth-ranked Harvard. St. Lawrence lost to Trinity in the Potter Cup final last season. Senior Amr Khalifa won the CSA Individual Championships in 2013. Cornell still holds an 8-4 advantage in the all-time series, though the Saints have won their four matches consecutively over the last three seasons — including three matches by a 5-4 margin.
On the women's side, the Big Red (3-3, 1-2) was predictably nudged down one spot to eighth in the CSA national rankings. It swapped positions with Columbia, which held off Cornell for a 5-4 victory last Friday. Senior
Reut Odinak, sophomore
Emma Uible and freshman
Nghi Nguyen are tied for the team lead with four victories apiece, and junior
Sydney Francis has won three straight matches from the lower two positions in the order.
St. Lawrence (2-8) defeated Wellesley last Friday to move up to 21st in the national rankings. The Big Red is 8-0 all-time against the Saints, including seven straight victories by a 9-0 margin.
