Women's Tennis Wraps Up Home Stand vs. Marist, Binghamton

ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team will close out an 11-match home stand this weekend with visits from Marist and Binghamton, marking the end of preparations for the Ivy League schedule. The Big Red takes on Marist at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by a visit from Binghamton at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Cornell (9-5) has won four straight, including dominating 7-0 decisions over Stony Brook and Niagara last weekend. Sophomore Allegra Hanlon made her dual debut with a win against the Purple Eagles at the No. 5 singles position, and classmate Lizzie Stewart improved to 11-3 in singles. Making the first No. 1 singles appearance of her career, junior Alexandra D'Ascenzo defeated her opponent from Niagara in straight sets.

Marist enters Friday night's match at Binghamton with a 3-8 record, having lost to Temple and Villanova in last weekend's swing through metro Philadelphia. The Red Foxes have played just one other Ivy League opponent this season, suffering a 4-0 loss Feb. 20 at Harvard. Karlene Pang is 3-7 from the No. 1 singles position and also typically competes at No. 1 doubles with Chloe Lant. Lant is tied with Clarie Schmitz with a team-high six victories in dual singles matches. Cornell is 2-0 all-time against Marist, having recorded a 6-1 victory on Feb. 19, 2005 and a 7-0 win March 14, 2015.

Binghamton is 6-7 heading into Friday's match against Marist, having lost its last three straight. Annie DiMuro leads the team with eight dual singles victories, primarily from the No. 2 position. Olga Ostrovetsky has seven wins from the No. 5 spot. Eight of the Bearcats' 13 victories have come from the No. 2 position — mostly from Ostrovetsky and Agatha Ambrozy.

The Big Red is 15-2 all-time in the series against Binghamton, which includes a five-match winning streak since Mike Stevens became the Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis. Stevens was actually the head coach at Binghamton when it last defeated Cornell, which was on Feb. 19, 2010. The teams crossed paths in a few fall invitationals, with Big Red competitors going 7-0 against Bearcats opponents.

Both of this weekend's matches are open to the public and free to attend.
