ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team will play its only doubleheader of the season on Saturday, when it hosts Stony Brook and Niagara in a pair of non-league contests at at Reis Tennis Center. The match against Stony Brook is schedule to begin at 10 a.m., with the tilt against the Purple Eagles slate for 3 p.m.
Cornell improved to 7-5 last weekend with two victories. The first was a dominating 7-0 sweep of Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday, then the Big Red outlasted St. John's for a 5-2 win on Sunday. The Big Red won 10 of 12 singles matches on the weekend, including two each from junior
Alexandra D'Ascenzo, sophomore
Lizzie Stewart, and freshmen
Mariko Iinuma and
Michelle Wang. Stewart has a team-high nine singles victories, and Iinuma and Wang are a combined 9-0 from the lower half of the order. Sophomore
Madison Stevens and Iinuma are 7-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Stony Brook is 4-3 this season after defeating Siena, 7-0, on Sunday on the heels of a 5-2 setback to Yale the day before. Sophomore Elizabeth Tsvetkov, who is 6-1 in dual singles, is the reigning America East Player of the Week after winning No. 1 singles matches last weekend against Yale's Madeleine Hamilton and Siena's Ali Garrity. Marika Cusick have already met this season, with Cusick winning in three sets in the Round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals. Sophomore Yana Nikolaeva earned Stony Brook's other point against Yale with a win at No. 3 singles. The Big Red is 4-0 all-time against the Seawolves, with those victories coming in 2001, 2006, 2007 and 2010.
Niagara is 4-6 after securing a rare 7-2 victory its last time out against regional foe Daemen, with the team playing to the Wildcats' Division II scoring system. Stella Peisakhova and Haley Hollins are both 5-5 from the top two singles positions. This will be the first-ever meeting between Cornell and Niagara after the Purple Eagles' trip to Ithaca last year was canceled due to a scheduling conflict.
Stony Brook and Niagara will also play at 9 a.m. Sunday at Reis. All of this weekend's matches are free and open to the public.
