Box Score (PDF)

PRINCETON, N.J. --- After taking a first-half lead, Cornell women's lacrosse was outscored 6-3 in the second as Princeton took an 8-7 win to claim sole possession of first place in the Ivy League.

Senior Olivia Mattyasovszky led the Big Red (10-2, 4-1 Ivy League) with three goals, including a pair in the first half to help Cornell to a 4-2 lead at the break, while Ellie McNulty completed a hat trick for the Tigers (9-3, 4-0 Ivy League), netting two consecutive tallies to tie the game in the second half. But Princeton goalkeeper Ellie DeGarmo proved to be the difference-maker, making 16 saves, including a number on crucial Cornell scoring chances.

Mattyasovszky drew first blood, coming out from the left side and firing past DeGarmo, but Abby Finkelston answered for the Tigers, knotting the score at one.

Moments later, junior Amie Dickson took advantage of an errant clear attempt by Princeton, scooping up the ball on the right sideline and breaking in to give Cornell the lead back with 20:13 left in the half.

Mattyasovszky doubled the Big Red's lead, one-timing a feed from classmate Emily Tripodi with 13:16 to go in the first, but Princeton once again responded quickly, with Amanda Leavell cutting into the deficit just 19 seconds later.

On a restart from a foul, sophomore Joey Coffy extended her goal streak to seven games, putting Cornell up 4-2 with just over 11 minutes left in the half. Dickson battled for the resulting draw control and sprinted into the Princeton end, feeding junior Catherine Ellis on the far post, but DeGarmo was there to make the stop. Cornell goalkeeper Renee Poullott responded with a big save of her own at the other end, denying a Princeton free-position attempt.

The Tigers had a pair of free-position chances to open the second half and capitalized on the second to once again make it a one-goal game. Poullott came up with a crucial save moments later on a fast-break opportunity to preserve the lead for the Big Red.

Ellis took advantage of an 8-meter chance of her own to put Cornell up 5-3 with 19:49 to go, but a pair of goals from McNulty evened the score at five. Allie Rogers then gave Princeton its first lead of the game with 14:25 to go before tacking on another to give the Tigers a two-goal lead.

Tripodi and Mattyasovszky teamed up again as Mattyasovszky completed the hat trick to bring Cornell back within one, but Princeton leading scorer Olivia Hompe found the back of the net to push the hole back to two at 8-6 with 2:32 to go.

Sophomore Taylor Reed capitalized on a free-position attempt with 51.2 seconds to go to take the game down to the wire, but DeGarmo made a big save on a chance from Ellis in the waning moments to preserve the win.

The Big Red will face a ranked opponent for the third straight game when No. 4 Syracuse makes the short trip to Schoellkopf Field for a Tuesday night contest under the lights.
