Columbia Trips Up Volleyball, 3-1

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Big Red volleyball team had a two-match winning streak snapped today, as it fell to Columbia, 3-1, at Levien Gymnasium in New York City. With the loss, Cornell slips to 8-9 overall as its Ivy record evens at 4-4.

The Lions took advantage of Cornell miscues to win the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-15. The Big Red came back from a five-point deficit in the third to win, 25-23, but Columbia rebounded to win the fourth set, 25-19.

Emily Wemhoff and Kit McCarty led the team with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. McCarty also had a team high .309 hitting percentage (13-3-32).

Libero Kiley McPeek led Cornell with 16 digs, while Zoe Chamness and Lauren Stubbs added 11 apiece.

Chamness finished the game with 27 assists, while Chelsea Sincox chipped in 12.

Columbia (7-10, 2-6 Ivy) was led by Anja Malesevic's 25 kills. She was the only Lion in double-digits, but Chichi Ikwuazom, Natasha Kosowicz, and Luciana Del Valle combined for 22 kills and just five errors to help the Lion cause. The home team hit .259 in the contest and held Cornell to just .106 overall.

Defensively, Ikwuazom posted 11 blocks (two solo) as Kosowicz had a match-high 22 digs, while Del Valle chipped in 18.

The Big Red is back in action next weekend when it welcomes Dartmouth to Newman Arena on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m., and Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. The game with the Big Green will feature Cornell's annual Dig Pink game. The Big Red will join forces with the Side-Out Foundation as part of its Breast Cancer Awareness Rally. Cornell invites fans to wear pink to the match vs. the Big Green to help support the cause. Those wishing to contribute can donate the day of the event or online at: https://giving.side-out.org/campaigns/12843. Proceeds are distributed among research teams focused on target therapies and molecular profiling as well as "living with cancer" organizations nationwide. The Big Red will also sell pink t-shirts and ribbons before the match.
