Women's Tennis Prepares For ECAC Indoor Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The women's tennis team descends on the Murr Center this weekend for a pair of matches at the ECAC Indoor Championships, hosted by Harvard. Cornell's matches against the host Crimson at 10 a.m. Saturday and Princeton at 9 a.m. Sunday will both be broadcast on the subscription-based Ivy League Digital Network here.

Cornell (2-2) is coming off a 7-0 dismantling of NJIT last Saturday at Reis Tennis Center. The Big Red swept the doubles matches and went on to win each singles match in straight sets — including junior Madison Stevens' love-love decision at the No. 6 position. The Big Red started dual-match play with a 7-0 sweep of Army West Point, then suffered a pair of losses to nationally-ranked teams Oklahoma State and Wichita State as part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

This year's tournament features a field exclusive to the Ivy League, with all Ancient Eight programs except Yale and Penn participating. Due to a snow storm blowing through New England on Thursday, matches originally scheduled for Friday have been canceled.

Fourth-seeded Cornell now opens play against sixth-seeded Harvard. The Crimson is 3-4, but on a three-match winning streak after defeating Boston College, Georgetown and Rhode Island in home matches last weekend. Harvard opened dual play with losses at Northwestern and DePaul, then two more losses at the ITA Kick-Off Classic against Alabama and Florida State. June Lee is 5-1 from the top two singles positions, and Lexi Milunovich was 5-0 in fall tournaments. The Crimson is just 4-12 in doubles matches.

Princeton (3-3) is the tournament's top seed and the defending Ivy League champion. The Tigers opened the season with victories over Delaware, Seton Hall and UT-Arlington before suffering three straight losses to 15th-ranked Texas A&M, Rice and Wake Forest. Alanna Wolff is 3-0 from the bottom two singles spots in dual matches. Katrine Steffensen typically competes at No. 1 and is a combined 4-14 in duals and tournament play, though nine of her matches have come against nationally ranked opponents.
