EMMITSBURG, Md. -- The Cornell softball team got a pair of outstanding pitching efforts to lead the Big Red to a Saturday sweep at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational at Meadows Field, topping both Canisius and Morgan State by 3-2 scores. The Big Red improved to 4-5 on the season with the victories.
Junior
Maddie Orcutt struck out nine in a complete game victory in game one, scattering six hits and stranding 10 runners to pick up her first win of the season in the circle. Bridgette Rooney homered for the second time this season and
Rebecca Kubena reached base twice with a single and a walk while driving in a run.
Tori Togashi doubled and
Jessica Bigbie drove in a run.
In game two, the Big Red used outstanding performances from Lisa Nelson (5.1 innings, two hits, two runs, six strikeouts), who picked up her second collegiate win, and Cora Geunes (1.2 innings, one hit, no runs), who collected her first save. Cornell scored solo runs in the first two innings en route to a 3-0 lead, then held on for the team's second straight win. Bigbie was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while
Olivia Lam also had two hits.
