EMMITSBURG, Md. -- The Cornell softball team pulled out a Sunday split to finish the weekend 3-1 at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational. The Big Red opened the day with a 7-3 loss to Manhattan before closing the weekend by holding off the host school 8-7 in the nightcap.
Game One
The Jaspers used a six-run third inning to overcome an early deficit and improve to 11-9 on the season with a 7-3 victory over the Big Red. The big blows came on a two-run double by Christine Gebhardt and a two-run single by Stephanie Reinhardt. The big inning backed a strong effort in the circle by Briana Matazinsky (4.0 innings, four hits, two runs), who improved to 6-3 on the year.
Both
Jessica Bigbie and
Tori Togashi had a pair of hits and Bridgette Rooney got the Big Red on the board in the top of the first with a two-run double. Junior
Maddie Orcutt surrendered just one hit out of the bullpen in the final three innings in relief of Katie Lew, who took the loss.
Game Two
Megan Murray was 2-for-3 with a home run and a pair of RBI to lead four Big Red players with multiple hits in an 807 win over the host Mountaineers.
The Big Red scored all of its runs in two innings, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first, falling behind 4-3 and then exploding for five more in the sixth to take the lead for good. Cornell held off Mount St. Mary's in the seventh, as the home team creeped within one run before rookie Lisa Nelson induced a groundout and struck out the final batter to close out her complete game win.

Tori Togashi each had two hits. Bigbie, who had two hits in the first game, was 1-for-3 with two walks and a pair of runs scored.
