Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

#11/11 Women's Lacrosse Downs Colgate, 13-6

ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's lacrosse team used a scoring run of five unanswered goals in the first half and scored the first six goals of the second half on its way to a 13-6 win over Colgate on Tuesday night at Schoellkopf Field. Senior Amie Dickson led the Big Red offense with five points on two goals and three assists while junior Taylor Reed notched a hat trick.

The win extended the Big Red's undefeated streak against the Raiders to 18 games and moved Cornell to 3-1 (1-0 Ivy) on the season while Colgate dropped to 3-2 overall.

Colgate took advantage of a woman-up opportunity to grab the early 1-0 lead 4:42 into the first half – and the lead would last for 10 minutes – but Cornell erupted for the game's next five goals and never looked back.

First, senior Catherine Ellis finished a feed from sophomore Tomasina Leska and then less than a minute later, Reed gave Cornell the lead on a pass from classmate Joey Coffy. It would be Coffy that gave Cornell a 3-1 edge – with the assist going senior Kristy Gilbert – and then just 32 seconds after that, sophomore Sarah Phillips scored to make it 4-1.

Right after another Phillips tally made it 5-1, Colgate converted a free-position shot with 12:10 to play in the half but wouldn't get any closer as the Big Red defense then held the Raiders scoreless for over 30 minutes of play. Dickson found her first of the game off of a pass from Ellis and then Reed notched her second of the opening stanza to send Cornell into the break up, 7-2.

It would be Reed that opened the scoring in the second half, completing the hat trick just 32 seconds in off of a feed from Dickson. Twenty-five seconds later, Gilbert made it 9-2 and then goals from Dickson and Ellis extended Cornell's lead to 11-2 less than six minutes into the second half.

Gilbert's second unassisted score of the game – and the one that started the running clock – was a stellar solo effort in which she picked off a clearing attempt and drove down the field by the defense before firing a shot past Asil Asfour. Cornell then closed out its scoring when freshman Lucy Pedlow converted a free-position shot to make it 13-2.

Meanwhile, the Cornell defense had been putting in work on the other end of the field and in the transition game, causing eight turnovers and picking up 21 ground balls. Senior Reneee Poullott made seven saves and picked up five ground balls while Hannah O'Reilly and Cait Callahan each caused two turnovers.

Colgate finally found the net again with 11:12 left on the clock and was able to start a streak of its own, scoring the final four goals of the game to make the final score, 13-6.

The Big Red picked up 21 ground balls to Colgate's 11 and had 25-21 edge in shots. Cornell also held the edge in draw controls, 12-9, with Dickson coming away with three of them to go along with her five point outing.

Asfour (3-2) and Poullott (3-1) both finished with seven saves. Phillips, Ellis and Gilbert all finished with two goals and one assists for the Big Red.

Cornell will look to move to 2-0 in Ivy League play this season when it visits Columbia on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup.
