Lions Answer Softball's Saturday Sweep With One Of Its Own

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- After Cornell swept a doubleheader from Columbia on Saturday afternoon, the Lions responded with a sweep of their own on Sunday with 4-3 and 11-6 victories to open Ivy League South Division play. Cornell has already matched its win total overall and in Ivy play (9-20, 3-9 Ivy), while Columbia improved to 16-20 (7-5 Ivy).

Game One
Columbia used two-run innings in the third and fifth to take its first win of the series to start the day. The Lions jumped out to a 3-2 lead after three before the Big Red jumped on the home team for three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Columbia's two run answer an inning later proved to be enough for Madison Canby in the circle, as the freshman improved to 10-8 on the year.

Madeline Avery's two-run double in the fourth highlighted the Big Red offensive attack. Sarah Murray had two of Cornell's seven hits on the day.

Katie Lew and Lisa Nelson each threw three innings and surrendered two runs as the Lions pounded out 11 hits overall. Sommer Grzybek was 3-for-4 in the cleanup slot for Columbia.

Game Two
Cornell out-hit the Lions 13-11 in the nightcap, but a five-run fourth inning for Columbia proved to be the difference as the home team overcame four errors.

The Big Red had four doubles among its 13 hits, including two from Megan Murray, who ended the afternoon 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Bridgette Rooney was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI and Sarah Murray and Madeline Avery also both had a pair of hits in the loss.

Grzybek, a thorn in Cornell's side all weekend, was 2-for-3 with three RBI for Columbia.

The Big Red will return home for a Central New York non-league doubleheader vs. Colgate on Tuesday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m. at Niemand-Robison Field.
