ITHACA, N.Y. -- Penn swept a Sunday afternoon softball doubleheader from Cornell at Niemand-Robison Field by scores of 8-0 in five innings in game one and 7-3 in the second game. The Quakers evened their record at 18-18 (8-8 Ivy), while the Big Red fell to 10-24-1 (4-12 Ivy).
Penn took advantage of Cornell errors to the tune of seven unearned runs, including four critical ones in the second game that saw the Big Red out-hit the Quakers 10-6.
Game One
After both teams breezed through the first three innings, Penn exploded for six runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to end the opener after just five innings. Jurie Joyner was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Molly Oretsky drove in three runs, while Alexis Sargent held it all together in the circle. The senior went the distance, scattering six hits to pick up the shutout, getting out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth to end the contest.
Megan Murray was 2-for-3 at the plate, while
Tori Togashi had a double. Katie Lew allowed five earned runs in the complete game loss.
Game Two
The Big Red took an early lead, but miscues in the field led to a Quaker rally.
Cornell got out to a 3-0 lead after two on RBI hits by
Olivia Lam and
Ivey Wagner and a sacrifice fly by
Megan Murray, but the Quakers answered back with a three-run homer by Leah Allen to tie it up in the top of the third. The tying homer came after a two-out error extended the inning. The visitors took the lead with three more in the fifth behind an Alexis Sargent homer, and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth for good measure.
Lam and Eric Rockstroh each had two hits in the loss.
Cornell returns to action on Wednesday, April 26 when they head across town to face Ithaca College at 3:30 p.m.
