Pitching Gives Big Red Doubleheader Split At Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell pitching didn't allow an earned run in a road sweep at crosstown rival Ithaca College, shutting out the Bombers 2-0 in game one before suffering a 2-1 loss in game two. Cornell moved to 11-25-1 on the year, while Ithaca is now 24-8.

Game One
Katie Lew was dominant in the circle against Ithaca's high-powered offense and the Big Red put together enough offense to scratch out a 2-0 win in game one against its crosstown rival.

The two teams cruised through the first five innings in a crisply-played contest that featured just two total hits. Lew surrendered two hits and no walks with a pair of strikeouts and Haley Congdon allowed one hit and two walks with four strikeouts. Cornell advanced one baserunner to third and Ithaca had just one reach scoring position the entire game.

Jessica Bigbie doubled to start the sixth inning and Megan Murray traded bases with her to score the first run of the game. The Big Red plated a second run on an RBI single by Tori Togashi two batters later.

Ithaca put itself in position to tie or take the lead in the seventh, using an infield single and an error to put runners at the corners with one out. Lew settled in, striking out the final two batters to pick up her second win of the season with the complete game four-hitter.

Game Two
Alex Wright's two-out, two-run home run in a fourth inning extended by an error was the difference in Ithaca's 2-1 win in game two. Cornell's Maddie Orcutt allowed just two hits and didn't walk a batter in taking the hard-luck loss.

Freshman Bridgette Rooney hit a solo home run, her 10th of the season, in the sixth inning to cut Ithaca's lead in half, but the offense couldn't sold Shannon Grage, who scattered five hits and struck out four in improving to 4-2 on the season. Cornell left six runners on base in the loss.

The Big Red will close out Ivy League play with a four-game series with South Division champion Princeton starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 29 at 12:30 p.m. Both teams will then travel to Ithaca for two contests on Sunday, April 30 at 12:30 p.m. at Niemand-Robison Field. Cornell will honor seniors Jessica
Bigbie and Michiko McGivney prior to game one.
