Bitar's Grand Slam Powers Baseball Past Binghamton, 10-2

Box Score (PDF)

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior Ellis Bitar was 3-for-5 with a double, a grand slam and five RBI to headline the baseball team's 10-2 victory over Binghamton on Wednesday at the Bearcats' Baseball Complex. The win gives Cornell (19-15) a two-game season sweep of Binghamton (20-8), which is both the defending America East champion and current league leader.

In what was likely the last start of his collegiate career, senior Scott Soltis earned the victory with a season-high five innings of work. He yielded just a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, but by that point had been spotted a seven-run lead by a couple of big innings from the Cornell offense.

Senior Frankie Padulo led off the third with a single and later scored on an RBI groundout from senior Tommy Wagner. Junior Pierre Le Dorze then hit a two-run home run to right-center, and Cornell suddenly had a 3-0 lead.

The Big Red then loaded the bases in the fourth on an error and a pair of walks, and Bitar cleared them all with his second home run in as many games. It was the first grand slam of his career, and the third by the team this season — joining efforts from Wagner and sophomore Will Simoneit during a April 5 game at Towson. Bitar's five RBI were also a career-high, and tied for the most in a single game this season by a Cornellian (Wagner, Simoneit, senior Cole Rutherford and junior Trey Baur).

Cornell pushed across another run in the sixth, then Bitar hit an RBI double in the eighth. Wagner followed up with a single up the middle, which pushed Bitar home and pushed Cornell into double digits for the fourth time this season.

Freshman Nick Cintron made his collegiate debut by pitching an uneventful sixth inning. Sophomore Adam Saks then provided a quiet eighth in just his third outing of the year.

Cornell closes out its season with a four-game series this weekend against Princeton. Friday's doubleheader start at noon in New Jersey, then the teams will head to Hoy Field in Ithaca for the final doubleheader at noon Sunday.
