Softball Splits With Ivy South Division Champ Princeton

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team used a pair of brilliant pitching performances to earn a split with Ivy League South Division champion Princeton, dropping game one 1-0 in eight innings before shutting out the Tigers 3-0 in the nightcap. Cornell moved to 12-26-1 (5-13 Ivy), while Princeton is 22-17 (14-4 Ivy).

Game One
Lisa Nelson was fantastic in the circle, but Princeton scratched together a run with a walk-off single by Alex Viscusi in the eighth to hand the freshman the hard-luck loss.

Claire Klausner allowed just three hits in picking up the shutout, improving to 10-5 on the season. She stranded all six Cornell base runners on the day. Marissa Reynolds was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Kaylee Grant reached three times with a single and two walks.

Madeline Avery, Megan Murray and Bridgette Rooney each had a hit for the Big Red.

Game Two
Maddie Orcutt was the equal of both game one starters, allowing just three hits for the complete game shutout.

Cornell jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two, getting on the board when Madeline Avery homered to left two batters into the game. The Big Red added two more on an RBI single by Erin Rockstroh, who then scored herself later in the inning on a wild pitch. That was all that Orcutt needed.

The junior, who did not allow an earned run in 13 innings on the week, went the distance and settled in after stranding the bases loaded in the first. The Tigers never seriously threatened afterwards, though they did put a pair of runner son in the third and fifth innings.

Cornell and Princeton will travel to Ithaca for a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Niemand-Robison Field. Prior to game one, the Big Red will honor seniors Jessica Bigbie and Michiko McGivney.
