ITHACA, N.Y. -- A furious rally by the Big Red in game one allowed Cornell to split with Ivy League South Division champion Princeton on Sunday afternoon at Niemand-Robison Field, winning game one 9-7 before falling 5-0 in the nightcap. The Big Red ended the day 13-27-1 (6-14 Ivy), while the Tigers are now 23-18 (15-5 Ivy).
The contest served as Senior Day for a pair of four-year starters in
Jessica Bigbie and
Michiko McGivney. Bigbie had a key RBI double in the game one rally.
Game One
One big inning was all Cornell needed to pick up a 9-7 win over the Tigers in the first contest, as
Megan Murray was 3-for-4 and
Olivia Lam homered, while both
Madeline Avery and
Rebecca Kubena collected two hits apiece in the victory.
Trailing 6-0 in the sixth, the Big Red exploded for nine runs in the home half of the inning to sink the Tigers. Princeton retired the first two batters before the Cornell offense came alive. A Bridgette Rooney walk innocently started the rally before
Olivia Lam slammed her fifth home run of the season to make it 6-2. Three straight hits, an error and four more base knocks turned a six-run deficit into a three-run lead.
Megan Murray's RBI single up the middle gave the home team its first lead after
Madeline Avery tied it with an infield single. A Rooney double capped the rally in a loud way, driving in two after her bases on balls started the big inning.
Cora Geunes picked up her first collegiate win after surrendering just one earned run over the final two innings. Katie Lew went the first five frames, allowing five hits and five runs.
Princeton hit a pair of home runs, including one by Alex Colon as part of a 2-for-2 day. Claire Klausner allowed seven runs, though just four were earned, in taking the loss.
Game Two
Princeton pitching stranded 12Â base runners in picking up a 5-0 shutout victory in game two.
Megan Murray and Erin Rockstroh each had two hits for the Big Red, but Marissa Reynolds belted two home runs for Princeton and Ashley LaGuardia made it all hold up.
The Tigers scored two in the first after the first blast by Reynolds and LaGuardia made it stand. The sophomore pitcher scattered six hits and four walks before Riley Wilkinson took over in the seventh. Cornell left the bases loaded in the fifth and had two runners on in the second, third and sixth - threatening to get back in the ballgame each time. Despite a number of sharply-hit balls, the Tiger defense was up to the task.
Cornell closes its season with a single game at Syracuse on Tuesday, May 2 at 3:15 p.m.
