ITHACA, N.Y. – Having won five of its last six matches, the women's squash team wraps up a stretch of seven consecutive contests away from home this week. The Big Red takes on Drexel at noon Wednesday, then travels to Brown at 2 p.m. Saturday and Yale at noon Sunday.
Cornell (8-3) continues to hold down the No. 8 spot in the Dunlop College Squash Rankings, as it has held all season. The Big Red took three of four on a busy trip Jan. 19-21, defeating George Washington, Franklin & Marshall and Middlebury around a loss to Stanford.
Sophomore
Lucy Martin leads the team with a 9-1 record from primarily the No. 8 spot, while the senior trio of Michele Garceau,
Margaux Losty and
Emma Uible continue to anchor the top third with a combined record of 19-7 from the Nos. 1-3 positions. Losty has won five straight matches, including an impressive three-set victory against Stanford.
On the Big Red's horizon are the two teams immediately underneath it in the rankings, then an opportunity to knock off a top-5 squad. Drexel (5-7) has held down the No. 9 spot all season, defending that position with a 6-3 win over Dartmouth on Saturday. The Dragons' strength comes from Ryan Morgan and Hannah Blatt at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots (combined 16-8 record). Cornell has not lost to Drexel in its five matches since the programs first met during the 2013-14 season, winning the last two matchups by an 8-1 margin.
Brown (5-4) ranks 10th and on a five-match winning streak, surviving a scare from #19 Bates last weekend to hold on for a 5-4 win. The Bears have been powered to most of their wins from the middle of the lineup. The teams are tied in the all-time series, 12-12.
Yale (7-3) started the season with six straight victories, including an upset of Penn to move up from sixth to fourth in the national rankings. But a 6-3 loss to Stanford ensued last Sunday, bumping the Bulldogs back down to No. 5. Yale's all-time record against Cornell is now 26-1, with the lone Big Red victory in the series coming on Jan. 20, 2001 in a 6-3 decision in Ithaca.
Madison Miles won at No. 5 in last year's match for the Big Red.
