PHILADELPHIA – Senior
Emma Uible rallied to win a pivotal match in five games, then classmate Michele Garceau sailed to win in three to clinch the women's squash team's pivotal 5-4 victory over Drexel on Wednesday afternoon at Kline & Specter Squash Center.
With the win, eighth-ranked Cornell (9-3) essentially stayed in line with the final berth for the Howe Cup – the top flight of the College Squash Association's national championships. While staving off ninth-ranked Drexel (5-8) is a key piece of that puzzle, the Big Red also tangles with 10th-ranked Brown on Sunday.
Wednesday's match set up to be tight right off the bat. While
Lauren Leizman won in three at No. 9, the other two matches in the opening rotation went to five games. Senior
Margaux Losty prevailed in one of those, at No. 3, against one of the Dragons' leading producers of victories this season.
Drexel rebounded to win two of three in the middle rotation to tie the score, then took a 4-3 lead with just the top two matches in progress. Uible was down at No. 2, 2-1, but stormed back to win the final two games by identical 11-7 scores to put the balance of the match on the No. 1 spot. Garceau delivered, winning in three to give Cornell a perfect 6-0 record all-time against Drexel.
Cornell returns to Ivy League play this weekend, taking on Brown at noon Saturday and Yale at noon Sunday.
