ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team won its fourth regatta of the Fall, but it was a seventh-place effort against one of the nation's top fields of the season that highlighted this past weekend's three-event schedule. The Big Red, ranked No. 1 in the conference, have just two weekends of sailing before beginning to shore itself up for the championship spring.
Cornell took seventh overall among 18 teams at the Women's Showcase Finals in Providence. Featuring 18 of the top teams in the country, Cornell more than held its own and was consistent throughout the weekend, placing seventh in B division and eighth in A division. B division had six top five finishes and won a pair of races, while A division had three placements in the top four among the 14 races over two days.
The Big Red finished on top of the podium at Kings Point, winning the Nevins Trophy on Sunday. Cornell won B division behind the fast sailing of Gerard Eastman and
Ana Schonander, while Ethan Anderson skippered A division to a fourth-place finish with
Pia Corujo (races 10-10, 12) and Greg Moore (race 11) making up the crew.
Cornell wrapped up the weekend at Hobart and William Smith's David Lee Arnoff Regatta, with the Big Red taking eighth overall. Sajan Alajiri raced with
Jessie Stoller (races 1-6) and
Miranda Sannino (races 7-13) taking fourth in B division. Alex Fowkes (races 1-9) and Ben Rizika (races 10-13) skippered in A division, with
Louisa Bjerke serving as crew.
Head coach
Brian Clancy's team will host the MAISA Women's and will travel to the Coed Showcase Finals at Navy this coming weekend.
