ITHACA, N.Y. – The lower third of the order continued its strong play, but the women's squash team couldn't scratch out any victories elsewhere on Friday evening in a 6-3 loss to Penn at Belkin International Squash Courts.
With the loss, Cornell (10-5, 2-4 Ivy League) – placed eighth in the most recent Dunlop College Squash Rankings – missed an opportunity to improve its Howe Cup seeding, now virtually cemented in its position behind seventh-ranked Penn (7-5, 3-3) with just a week before the start of the College Squash Association's national championships.
Competing in just her fourth scoring match of the season, junior
Hannah Scherl rolled to a three-game victory at No. 9. Slotted at No. 8 for just the second time this year, junior
Lauren Leizman shook off an extra-point loss in the third game to win in four. That pushes Cornell's overall record at that position to 11-3 – same as No. 7, where sophomore
Lucy Martin won in three. Martin continues to lead the team in victories, now with 11.
While Cornell is now just 2-27 all-time against the Quakers, its three points improved upon a pair of 9-0 losses last year. Three of Penn's six victories on Friday required four games, including a pair of games with extra points from senior
Emma Uible at No. 2.
The Big Red concludes its regular season at noon Sunday, when it travels to second-ranked Princeton. The match against the Tigers will be available to watch through subscription-based Ivy League Network
